The Story of the 4th Grade Science Fair Family Team Effort:

Sciencefair600

YELLOW: attention-grabbing, comfort, liveliness, cowardliness, hunger, optimism, overwhelm, Summer, comfort, liveliness, intellect, happiness, energy, conflict (list from changingminds.org)

Yellow is the color of post it notes for a reason - yellow grabs your attention and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with remembering stuff - which is the "why" of the story on this page.??My son had a science fair project assigned right before spring break and he told me he had it totally under control, that he was big now and didn't need my help with it.... Fast forward 3 or 4 weeks and he announces at 9 pm one school night "the science fair projects were due today, Ms. Campbell says I can turn it in tomorrow."??Charlie and I scrambled to help him get the project finished and presentable and he turned it in a day late - he said that Ms. Campbell said it was the best project in the class and that he would have gotten an A but for the day late thing, so he got a B.??So using yellow for remembering stuff - like deadlines - was a no brainer for this page.

I like the combination of yellow and grey and wanted to use that color combination as my main color combo on this page, but that often has a more sophistocated feel which is not what I was going for with this 4th grade Science Project page, so added in some glues and greens and even a little pink to make the page more "kid" like and playful.

Journaling:??"Spring Break:??I'm doing a Science Fair Project on the Evaporation of Water! 1. Regular Water, 2. Salt Water, 3. Colored Water."??(My 10 yr old son Mac announced on the ride home from school the last Friday before Spring Break 2012 started)??"Need any help?" I asked. "NO!??I have it all under control."??"Ok, Awesome!"?? ... "3 or 4 weeks later "Hey Mom!??The Science Fair Project was due today but Ms. Campbell says I can turn it in tomorrow."??Charlie/my husband to me and Mac "Those scrapbooking skills of your Mom's will come in handy; Katie, Do the posterboard and I'll google which water is supposed to evaporate the fastest!"??(at the bottom) "Daddy won the Florida State Science Fair as a Kid."??(he actually did - his was the best one in the entire state - he created anti-barnacle underwater paint).??(journaling card with the B) "B-plus. Ms. Campbell said it was the best one; but she gave me a B+ instead of an A+ because it was a day late."

Note:??My son has ADHD so meeting deadlines is something he has an issue with.??I've been reading the parenting book Love & Logic over the past couple years and although this last minute Science Fair scramble looks a lot like helicopter parenting; we haven't gotten any special accommodations for him at school and we didn't go in to talk to the teacher about he day late thing.??I was actually pretty impressed that he remembered to tell me about the science fair deadline at all.??We're all still in a learning process and I'm pretty sure we'll look back on this experience and have a chuckle, it was a fun and funny late night with some quality family time - despite the admittedly not so awesome turning in homework on time skills.??Live and learn, this one was a net positive.

Supplies:??DCWV "The Snapshot Stack" for the word bubbles and yellow strip with the glittered cameras in the middle; post it notes; KI Memories letter stickers; Little Yellow Bicycle stickers; Echo Park patterned paper (grey stripes).

P.S. I hope Mac's teacher isn't reading this blog!? He is in a Montessori Program so he has the same teacher in 5th grade that he had in 4th!
