South Africa Lonmin miners blamed for the deaths of protesters that police killed

Shortly after South African police shot and killed people at the Marikana mine, President Jacob Zuma declared a week of mourning for the victims. But now that week is over, and officials are placing the blame for the deaths on other miners.

According to BBC News, 270 workers will be tried for the murder of their 34 colleagues that police shot dead. However, police officers have not been charged. The strange twist to the case comes after Zuma told workers that he "felt their pain." He had promised that the shootings would be investigated.

More from GlobalPost: When the BRICs Crumble

The Lonmin Marikana platinum mine made headlines on August 16, when striking workers confronted police. Police officers said that they had to fire in self-defense, because the protesters were armed with machetes and would not retreat. The mine has also been part of a violent turf war between rival unions, GlobalPost reported.

But the South African Institute of Race Relations said in a statement that the police response was unjustified, and that police kept shooting even after miners retreated.

Isaac causing more rescues, evacuations

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Isaac soaked Louisiana for yet another day and pushed more water into neighborhoods all around the city, flooding homes and forcing last-minute evacuations and rescues. New Orleans itself was spared, thanks in large part to a levee system built after Katrina.

As the storm slogged its way across the state and windy conditions calmed, the extent of some of the damage became clear. Hundreds of homes, perhaps more, were underwater, thousands of people were staying at shelters and half of the state was without power. About 500 people had to be rescued by boat or high-water vehicles, and at least two people were killed.

And the damage may not be done. Waters continued to rise and a dam at a lake near the Louisiana-Mississippi border was under a lot of pressure and power lines and trees were felled as Isaac moved into Arkansas.

Farther south, evacuations were ordered in a lot of places ahead of the storm, but Isaac's unpredictable, meandering path and the amount of rain ? as much as 16 inches in some places ? caught many off guard.

"I was blindsided, nobody expected this," said Richard Musatchia, who left his home in LaPlace, northwest of the city.

Musatchia said 5 feet of water filled his home before a neighbor passed by with a boat and evacuated him and his 6-year-old boxer, Renny.

He piled two suitcases, a backpack and a few smaller bags onto the boat and said that's all he has left. He left a brand-new Cadillac and a Harley-Davidson behind.

"People have their generators, because they thought the power would go out, but no one expected the water," he said.

Others trickled into a parking lot of the New Wine Christian Fellowship church, delivered by National Guard vehicles, school buses and pickup trucks.

Daphine and David Newman fled their newly decorate home with two trash bags of clothing. They have lived in their subdivision since 1992, and they never had water in their home from previous storms, including Katrina. The comparison was common one since Isaac hit on the seventh anniversary of the devastating 2005 storm, though the differences were stark.

Katrina was more powerful, a Category 3 at landfall, while Isaac was a Category 1 at its peak. Isaac wobbled around; Katrina barreled into the state and quickly moved through.

David Newman was frustrated the government spent billions reinforcing levees for New Orleans and Jefferson Parish after Katrina and now he had the water.

"The water's got to go somewhere," he said. "It's going to find the weakest link, and with the wind directions, we was ground zero."

As officials called for impromptu evacuations, a debate started about whether anyone was to blame.

Jefferson Parish Council president Chris Roberts said forecasters at the National Hurricane Center needed a new way of measuring the danger. Many second-guessed evacuation orders, he said.

"The risk that a public official has is, people say, 'Aw, it's a Category 1 storm and you guys are out there calling for mandatory evacuations,'" Roberts said.

Hundreds of people in lower Jefferson chose to ride out the storm ? and many of them had to be rescued, he said.

Eric Blake, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, said although Isaac's cone shifted west as it zigzagged toward the Gulf Coast, forecasters accurately predicted its path, intensity and rainfall. He did say the storm crept ashore somewhat slower than anticipated.

Blake also said local officials and residents shouldn't use Katrina as a guide for what areas were at the greatest risk of flooding during Isaac.

"Every hurricane is different," Blake said. "If you're trying to use the last hurricane to gauge your storm surge risk, it's very dangerous."

Along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans, officials sent scores of buses and dozens of high-water vehicles to help evacuate about 3,000 people as rising waters lapped against houses and left cars stranded. Floodwaters rose waist-high in some neighborhoods, and the Louisiana National Guard was working with sheriff's deputies to rescue people stranded in their homes.

A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted a couple and their dogs early Thursday from a home in LaPlace, between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, after storm surge poured into their neighborhood and local authorities called for help. The couple was taken to New Orleans and reported in good condition.

"The husband and wife and their two dogs were in an area where a lot of houses washed away," said Lt. Cmdr. Jorge Porto. "They used a flashlight inside the house as a signaling device, which made all the difference in locating them effectively."

To the east, evacuations were ordered in a sparsely-populated area as a lake dam threatened to break near the Mississippi-Louisiana border. Officials in Tangipahoa Parish, La., feared the water it would pour into the already swollen river would flood low-lying areas downstream. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said officials there would release water at the dam.

A tow truck driver was killed Thursday morning when a tree fell on his truck in Picayune, Miss., just across the state line from Louisiana. In Vermilion Parish, a 36-year-old man died after falling 18 feet from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle ahead of the storm. Deputies did not know why he climbed the tree.

President Barack Obama declared federal emergencies in Louisiana and Mississippi late Wednesday, allowing federal aid to be freed up for affected areas.

In southeast Arkansas, winds gusted to more than 40 mph and heavy rainfall fell, knocking down trees and power lines in Chicot County. The small farming town of Eudora lost power. In neighboring Ashley County, a handful of dead trees were scattered across roadways, according to County Judge Emory Austin, who said he was worried about flooding.

"We need the rain, I just don't need a lot," Austin said.

Isaac arrived seven years after Hurricane Katrina and passed slightly to the west of New Orleans, where the city's fortified levee system easily handled the assault.

"Unfortunately, that's not been the case for low-lying areas outside the federal system, in particular lower Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes," said Louisiana Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu. "Hurricane Isaac has reinforced for us once again just how vulnerable these critical areas are. We must re-engage the Corps of Engineers on this."

In Plaquemines Parish, a sparsely populated area south of the city that is outside the federal levee system, dozens of people were stranded in flooded coastal areas and had to be rescued. The storm pushed water over an 18-mile levee and put so much pressure on it that authorities planned to intentionally puncture the floodwall Thursday to relieve the strain.

Louisiana's Public Service Commission said 901,000 homes and businesses around the state ? about 47 percent of all customers ? were without power Thursday. Utility company Entergy said that included about 157,000 in New Orleans.

Officials rushed to evacuate more than 100 nursing home residents Wednesday from Plaquemines Parish, an area with a reputation for residents hunkering down to weather storms and perhaps the hardest hit by Isaac. In this hardscrabble, mostly rural parish, even the sick and elderly are hardened storm veterans.

"I don't think we had to evacuate to begin with," said Romaine Dahl, 59, as he sat in a wheelchair. "The weather was a hell of a lot worse last night than it is now. And I got an idea that after all this is said and done they're going to say everything is over with, go on back home."

Isaac's maximum sustained winds had decreased to 40 mph, and the National Hurricane Center said it was expected to become a tropical depression by Thursday night, meaning its top sustained winds would drop below 39 mph. The storm's center was on track to cross Arkansas on Friday and southern Missouri on Friday night, spreading rain as it goes.

Forecasters expected Isaac to move farther inland over the next several days, dumping rain on drought-stricken states across the nation's midsection before finally breaking up over the weekend.

Isaac came ashore late Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane, with 80 mph winds near the mouth of the Mississippi River. It drove a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland.

Pantech Magnum gets pictured en route to AT&T

Pantech has been steadily building its relationship with AT&T over the past few years by supplying the carrier with a healthy dose of budget-friendly handsets. Could it be that the OEM has finally earned the opportunity to add a higher-end device to the GSM giant's lineup? It may very well be the case with the P9090, aka the Magnus. Our sources have hooked us up with the first images of the smartphone, which confirms an 8MP camera with LED flash, front-facing cam and at least Ice Cream Sandwich (if not Jelly Bean). While the image doesn't reveal any other specs, we're expecting to see a 720p display, LTE connectivity and a Qualcomm MSM8960 dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. We're still not sure what to think about the bumpy design on its back, though it does remind us a little bit of what Verizon has done on the HTC Incredible series. The specs may be quite similar to the Vega Racer 2, though the phone itself doesn't look anywhere close to the manufacturer's Korean flagship. AT&T still hasn't announced the Magnus, but we'll let you know pricing and availability as soon as we have it.

New People Profile: Nursing Assistant Program Director Marilyn ...

Marilyn Slattengren: Director of LSC?s Nursing Assistant Program?and grandmother extraordinaire! Can you see the family resemblance?

Marilyn Slattengren was appointed director of Lake Superior College?s Nursing Assistant program shortly after LSC?s 2012 spring semester wrapped up.

No stranger to the program, she?s been teaching nursing assistant courses as an adjunct instructor at Lake Superior College in 2003. In fact, Marilyn ? who was born and raised in the Duluth area ? has been teaching, working and creating passion for the nursing field for more than 40 years.

We asked her a couple of questions about her career, her life and her loves. In return, she gave us a healthy dose of answers. Read on!

Tell us about your education/work background. Where did you receive your training?and what was your favorite thing about it?

I?ve been in the medical field for 42 years. I started as a nursing assistant while attending the former Duluth Area Vocational Institute (Now Lake Superior College) and earned my licensed practical nursing (LPN) certificate. From there, I earned an AA in Nursing at Hibbing Community College. After that, I continued on and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bemidji State University. I also earned my teaching license from BSU.

Marilyn and her husband Tom have been married for more than 40 years.

As far as work history, it?s?extensive. I?ve worked as a staff nurse at St. Mary?s (now Essentia Health System). Supervisor and assistant director of nursing at Viewcrest Health Center. Owner/operator of Tender Loving Homecare. Consultant for area home care agencies/group homes. I worked in the Proctor district as a school nurse and in special education for 18 years working with the medically fragile children. While at Proctor, I was approached to start a nursing assistant program as well as teach medical terminology in the high school. I worked diligently to make that program a success, which it is! I recently resigned from my position as health occupations instructor at Esko High School after nearly 10 years in order to accept my current position as director of the Nursing Assistant program here at LSC. I?m already loving it.

Why did you pursue nursing and nursing instruction as a career path?

I first realized that I wanted to enter the medical profession when I was in 3rd grade. I had an uncle who lived on a farm, and he was missing his thumb ? which I later learned was from a ?wood chopping episode.? But as a kid, I was determined to figure out how someone could be missing a thumb ? how it happened, what led up to it and how they took care of his hand. In other words, I had the curiosity of a nurse. That curiosity never changed! I knew this was my destined choice in careers!

Basically, my passion is the nursing profession.?Other than my husband, children and grandchildren, it?s ?the love of my life.? And I hope that passion continues to rub off on students so that THEY can feel the same way about nursing!

What?s your FAVORITE activity outside of work? (For example: Do you like writing? Knitting? Hockey? Fishing?)

I enjoy the summer sun! Being on the lake, boating things like that. I also really enjoy watching the grandchildren ski (which was MY my passion back ?in the day!?), going camping, fun things like that. Being with my children and granchildren are my priorities, but I also enjoy cross-country skiing, scrapbooking. Now that I have a ?set schedule? I can get back to more of my outside-of-work interests!

Where do you call your ?home town?? What?s your favorite part of the Duluth area and why?

I grew up on Pike Lake, and it?ll always be ?my special lake.? But my favorite local getaway would be Lake Superior and Canal Park ? so many wonderful restaurants (which I love to visit) and the boardwalk is so special to this area! Gooseberry Falls is another place I love to get away, along with Bayfield, WI. I just love the drive; stopping and getting smoked fish with cheese and crackers, sitting on the rocks and enjoying our awesome ?up north? weather.

Clean air and natural beauty?can?t beat it.

Romance at the RNC: Man proposes to girlfriend onstage

It looks as if Ann Romney's message from Tuesday night - that this is about love - struck a chord. Bradley Thompson, 32, proposed to his girlfriend of three years, Laura Bowman, on the stage of the Tampa Bay Times forum on Wednesday.

Neither Thompson nor Bowman are here as delegates - in fact, it's not even clear if they're Republicans; the couple declined to tell reporters when asked which party they support. Bowman is a production coordinator and Thompson is a production manager for the convention. The couple met three years ago on a production job and they live in New York City.

Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

Bowman said she thought something fishy was going on when she was called for a sound check. Although they knew they would be engaged eventually - the couple told reporters that they had actually picked the ring together - Bowman said she didn't think it would happen today.

It may not be a flash mob, but proposing on the same stage where a presidential candidate will officially accept his party's nomination is a pretty good proposal story.

There's no word yet on the wedding plans for the couple.

Pussy Is Having a Moment

Pussy Riot.

Pussy Riot is the Russian feminist punk-rock group based in Moscow who staged an illegal performance, described as a ?punk prayer?

Igor Mukhin via wikiamedia.org

Say what you will about all of the media attention that the incarcerated Russian punk collective Pussy Riot has generated in the West. Whether you think they?re martyrs, hooligans, or just savvy performance artists with a meme-ready message, one thing is certain: They got a lot of people saying the word pussy.

To censor or not to censor? That?s one question that the much-publicized trial of three members of the feminist collective, Maria Alyokhina, Yekaterina Samutsevich, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, forced American media outlets to grapple with. In some cases, as Amanda Holpunch points out in the Guardian, the flip-flop was speedy and visible: In July, the L.A. Times referred to the women as ?members of a feminist punk group with a profane name,? but by August they were printing ?Pussy Riot.? The New York Times, arguably the old guard when it comes to newspaper standards, should have been counted on to print some well-deployed asterisks, but they instead put the band?s full name on the front page. Network TV has been a little more cautious. A segment on NBC?s Today referred to the group as ?the punk rock girl band, whose name we can't say on morning television.? More often than not, though, the word has showed up uncensored. When I saw that my local ABC affiliate in D.C. was photographing an Aug. 10 Pussy Riot solidarity concert across from the Russian Embassy, I wondered what sort of euphemistic contortions might appear in the likely conservative coverage. But actually, WJLA just called it like they saw it: ?Pussy Riot.?

So the stodgy old news outlets turned out to be less stodgy than expected. Now a follow-up question: Is this sudden cultural acceptance of a word that has never had many positive connotations for women empowering?

?What?s funny is that I really hate the word pussy. I hate it!? Shawna Potter, the frontwoman of Baltimore hardcore band War on Women told me a few days after her band headlined the aforementioned Pussy Riot solidarity concert. ?And I hate it because it means something weak.?

True, that unparalleled barometer of modern usage, Urban Dictionary, paints a bleak picture of pussy: It?s defined either as a term for a ?cowardly? male (?He didn?t jump, he [was] too much of a pussy!?) or a rather dehumanizing word that reduces women to faceless herds of sexy cattle (?Dude, we are totally gonna get some pussy tonight!?). Like most slang terms for female genitalia (see also: cunt), though, pussy used to be a neutrally connoted synonym for ?woman? or ?girl.? The English writer Phillip Stubbs noted in his 1583 treatise on manners, The Anatomie of Abuses, that "the word pussie is now used of a woman,? and an entry in the 1913 edition of Webster?s Unabridged Dictionary defines it as ?an endearing name for a girl.? The ?cowardly man? meaning is derived from another source entirely, the Latin pusillanimous. Over time, these words must have bled into one another, and the multiple definitions of pussy became yet another linguistic suggestion of feminine weakness.

One of the revolutionary projects of the riot grrrl movement of the early ?90s was to reclaim diminutive and derogatory words. From adding a string of growling consonants to the petite epithet girl to confronting the connotations of the word slut, riot grrrls pioneered a frenzy of linguistic salvage jobs that remains controversial today. Leading this charge was the band Bikini Kill, whose frontwoman Kathleen Hanna famously used to perform with the word SLUT scrawled across her stomach, and which christened its 1993 debut album with a provocative title: Pussy Whipped.

Post-riot grrrl, efforts to recontextualize pussy have dwindled?until this year. And while Pussy Riot may have been the force that drove this over the edge, there have been several other?if less widely publicized?instances in 2012 of female musicians asking listeners to confront and rethink the word.

First there was divisive rapper/viral sensation Iggy Azaela (2 million views and rising), who dropped a single called ?PU$$Y? back in January. The 22-year-old Australian emcee has said she?s out to ?make people question and redefine old ideals,? and no matter what you think of her highly stylized, in-your-face aesthetic, it?s hard to deny that ?PU$$Y? does just that. The hook is all about reclamation through repetition, a male automaton voice sputtering ?Pussy/ pussy/ pussy,? until the word passes through that phase where it ceases to mean anything and then perhaps means something entirely new.

Then there?s the Montreal-based electro artist Grimes, the one-woman project of 24-year-old Claire Boucher. Her new video ?Genesis? has racked up a million and a half views since it premiered last week, and it features?among many other wonderfully bizarre images?Boucher brandishing a sword while sporting a trucker hat that says ?PUSSY.? It?s an image of feminine strength, but also a bit of self-branding: This year, Boucher launched a line of vagina-shaped jewelry called?what else??Pussy Rings.

?I feel like vaginas don?t need to be scary, and they don?t need to be a curse word,? Boucher recently told MTV Hive when asked about the line. ?Every dressing room I?m ever in has penises drawn on the walls, and touring is so dick-dominated that I just want to be like, ?Here?s a fucking vagina.? It?s also a very sexual object that?s removed from a person so [on the ring] it?s kind of desexualized and emphasizes the beauty of the organism in the biological and abstract and presents it as art.?

Of course, Azalea?s and Boucher?s messages aren?t directly connected to Pussy Riot, but they, along with rappers like Azaelia Banks, who?s leading a charge to rethink the word cunt, still feel all of a piece. Harbingers of a generation of young female artists ready to co-opt language that in the past has been used to objectify, weaken, and dehumanize all things feminine.

This aim is what has the somewhat reluctant Potter on board. ?If anyone in America will somehow start to associate a little more strength with the word pussy because of [Pussy Riot],? she told me, ?then I?d be fine with that word.?

or whatever the crisis may be ? has a life of its own. Men and women keep dying, and U.S. policies keep accelerating the centrifugal forces that are driving the country toward civil conflict, which may have profound implications for future regional and international security." ? NYC garbage man sifts through tons of trash to find woman?s wedding ring

Losing a wedding ring can move folks to great feats. (Isaac Brekken/Getty Images)The saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure," took on a near literal meaning after a New York City garbage man sifted through tons of trash to find one woman's missing wedding ring.

But how did an expensive wedding ring end up in a trash pile? The New York Daily News reports that Danielle Carroll lost her ring, which was already a replacement for an earlier misplaced wedding ring, while at work. The 45-year-old teacher says she and her young students were using a "slippery hand cleaner" which must have caused her ring to slide off into a trash bag.

"I was so busy that day and cleaning my hands constantly that I didn't notice I had lost the ring," she told the paper.

Carroll tells the paper she awoke at 3:30 a.m., suddenly realizing the ring was missing. She and her husband raced outside to retrieve it from the trash but the NYC Parks Department had already picked up the garbage.

Carroll left a note on a nearby Parks Department garbage truck, which read, 'Hello, I believe my wedding ring is in this truck. It is in a bag that was put in a trash bag in the park at the end of the day, Sunday. It is 5AM and I came down to the park to look for it and then saw this truck with trash in it. Please call me to tell me where this truck is going and I will come ASAP."

NYC Parks Department employee Gary Gaddist read the note and decided to intervene. He called Carroll and told her he would look for the ring, though he noted, "It really was like looking for a needle in a haystack."

But somehow the 42-year-old Gaddist located the trash bag amid several tons of garbage at Randalls Island.

"This guy did something he didn't have to do, and I find that amazing,' Carroll told the paper after Gaddist called with the surprising good news.

For his part, Gaddist said he decided to help because he could tell the couple were in love.

"It was a love thing," he said.

Maria Sharapova pays tribute to the retiring Kim Clijsters ? Tennis News

Former world number one, Kim Clijsters, will be retiring from the professional tennis after the completion of the US Open Championships at New York. She has been a terrific player and still considered to be one of the toughest competitors at a professional platform. The Belgian superstar has decided to put an ending to her marvellous career at the age of 29 and the sad but memorable moment for the tennis fanatics will take place at Flushing Meadows.

Belgian?s fellow competitor, Maria Sharapova, was completely flattered by the supreme authority of Clijsters at tennis courts. She commented, ?What?s there to say about Kim? There are so many great things besides the fact she?s been an incredible tennis player and champion. She?s someone that went away from the sport to commit herself to being a mother and a good wife and then coming back and being a professional and winning a few more grand slams.?

The Russian blonde further added, ?She was always so focused and determined. One of the best athletes the game saw in women?s tennis and just a really great person, very humble; at the end of the day, just a down-to-earth person that reflected on life in a very good way.?

It will definitely be a moment of gratitude and honour for Clijsters to receive a final round of applause from the fans at the hard courts of New York. She has been one of the best tennis player to have graced the sport; her dedication and willpower to succeed at all platforms is worthy of an applause. Sharapova definitely said it straight forward and kept no secrets that she was a kind of a role model for her in the early days.

Clijsters is mother of one child and wants to prosper her family further and grace her husband with another beautiful offspring. It requires utmost attention to raise a kid. In 2007, the Belgian superstar showed her interest to be a good mother by dedicating two and half year?s; detaching from professional tennis so that she can give all the time to the new born.

Clijsters is a great player and an awesome companion.

RolePlayGateway?

Some stuffs. Descriptive, I know.

I know I'm asking for feedback on a short snippet of a much bigger story, and that might be confusing as far as reviewing something goes, but anything productive that you can offer is greatly appreciated.

I Was An Idiot

?I was an idiot.?

The therapist jerked in his seat, brimming with surprise at having finally heard the young man?s voice reveal anything other than polite greetings turned derision for their sessions. Three weeks of one hour-long silence per day between the doctor and his patient had almost made the professional lose hope.

?You were an idiot,? Thad Whittock repeated. ?Why is that, Iante??

The blond sat across from him, feet drawn up on the armchair as if he belonged there in his striped pyjamas, raised his head and shrugged. ?You know why,? he stated, lifting a hand to rub at one bruised eyelid. ?You?ve got it all written down in the file. What happened, that is.?

?You said ?I was an idiot?, Iante. Past tense. So you?re not an idiot now??

Iante took a moment to consider those words. ?No,? he replied. ?Not any more. I know better now.?

?When did you start being an idiot??

?I never had a chance,? Iante snorted, shaking his head. ?Never had a hope in hell.?

?You?ll need to elaborate for me, Iante.?

?Do you know it says ?Harri Clowes? on my birth certificate??

?I do, yes.?

?He?s not my real father. He died before I was born, my biological father. Mum says that he never even knew I existed. I don?t know if she meant to make me feel better by saying that or whether she was being honest, but it didn?t make it any easier. My father was a policeman. I?ve seen pictures ? I look an awful lot like him ? and in every single one he?s smiling, and so is my Mum. After he died? She doesn?t smile the same way.?

?She lost her husband and a fantasy of the perfect family,? Whittock ventured aloud. ?Are you surprised that she can?t smile now as she did then??

?Not surprised. I wish that she could?ve found reason to, though.? He picked at the cuff of his shirt and absently pulled a thread from the warm fabric. ?I wish that I could?ve made her smile properly again.?

?Perhaps you did,? the doctor offered. ?Perhaps you were her reason to smile, but??

?But Harri Clowes existed, and he ruined her life before I could even breathe.?

?Tell me how.?

?He knew she was vulnerable. He knew she was alone, still reeling from the loss of what had to have been the most amazing man she?d ever met. We were going to be a proper family. I was going to have someone to look up to and she?d have someone to look forward to seeing every single morning. Harri was neither, as much as he liked to pretend.?

?Are you in pain, Iante??

?Yes,? the trainee forensic pathologist replied sullenly, honestly, though the expression on his face clearly indicated towards confusion at the sudden segue. ?I?ve another hour before my next dose.?

?And another surgery before there?s a chance you can start to heal properly.? Whittock allowed the silence between them to linger for just a few seconds before he leant forward in his seat and gestured with a hand towards his bookcase. ?I?ve read each and every single one of these books, Iante, and they?re all on the subject of the human body. I don?t doubt that you?ve read quite a number of these texts too, but there?s something I want to ask a talented, aspiring doctor like you. Will you tell me why you believe that you?re still in this hospital, and why you?re still in my office for an hour every day after three weeks and four days of sessions??

?I?m still in the hospital because there were complications from my surgery,? Iante muttered. ?And I?m still in this room every day because my friends think I?ve gone crazy.?

?Not quite,? Thad chuckled. ?You?re still in this hospital because you still need to heal ? and most of the reason for that is due to the complications you?re dealing admirably with from your injuries. You?re still in this room daily because your friends are concerned about your mental health. You haven?t spoken to any of them, and you barely acknowledge their existence. You?re polite to the nurses ? you thank them for your medication and say ?please? when they ask if you?d like something. You?re always ready with a ?good morning? when you?re wheeled into this room, too. So tell me, Iante, does it really surprise you that your friends are afraid that something?s wrong with you??

?Something is wrong with me!? Iante snapped, throwing his legs off the chair so that he could level his eyes with the doctor?s. ?Something?s wrong with me and there isn?t anything I can do about it because it?s been wrong since before I was born.?

?Harri Clowes.?

?He has done nothing for me but make me feel like I?m useless. Like being abused is normal and natural and that it means love.?

?But you know this isn?t true.?

?I know that now. I know that after listening to Tommy rant about it for hours after I ran away from Matthew. I know that after listening to everyone who has never been in my situation tell me that it?s going to be okay. Why am I the crazy one for believing that nothing?ll be normal for me??

?Why would you say that, Iante? That nothing will be normal for you??

?I don?t want it to be normal for me! Normal for me is living with Harri. Or living with Matthew. That?s normal. That took up nearly twenty of my twenty-six years on this planet, and I don?t think people realise what becomes rational up here when they haven?t grown up like I did,? Iante spat, pointing toward his temple with a finger.

?One of your bosses left home at sixteen too, did she not??

?With James,? Iante agreed, relaxing back into his seat after having become so riled ? even such a small demonstration of disgust had tired him considerably. ?After her sister killed a boy from their school.?

?And you don?t think that she feels something like you do??

?Because her sister killed someone??

?She faced difficulty too.?

?Romanae?s father loved her. Her mother probably loved her from the moment she was born. When Romanae faced difficulties, her father was by her side constantly.?

?Why is she so different to you? She left when she was sixteen because she couldn?t handle it. You left at sixteen.?

?Maybe you should be asking how we?re similar. Her mother died to give them life. My father died before my mother even told him about me. Her father loves her dearly and always has. My mother barely existed for me. Romanae had friends and family who adored her. I never had that kind of support; I was the weird kid at school, the kid who had a strange name and always had bruises on his face.?

?Iante Clowes isn?t a typical Irish name.?

?No, it?s not. Maybe if I had been a stronger kid, no one would?ve cared so much about my name or that I went to school with unexplained marks.?

?You have a real issue with people in parental roles,? Whittock stated, brows furrowing. ?And I imagine authority figures also slot into that.?

?The only person who has ever done everything he could for me is Tommy,? Iante murmured, eyes on his knees. ?If it hadn?t been for me, he?d have killed Matthew the first time he hit me. If I?d swallowed my pride and went for help, Matthew?d never have been able to hospitalise me once, let alone twice.?

?You wouldn?t ever have been able to cope with that pressure, Iante, and you knew that six years ago just as much as you know that now.?

?I should?ve been stronger. I should?ve trusted Tommy.?

?I think you did the right thing.?

?You?re an idiot, too.?

?Perhaps,? the doctor allowed, smiling softly. ?Iante, you?re a wonderful young person. You?re far stronger than you give yourself credit for, and I think that it?s time you and I did something productive.?

The young medic blinked in surprise, but pulled his feet back up onto the armchair to watch the doctor stand and head to his bookcase.

?I?m sorry for calling you an idiot.?

?No, I don?t think you are,? came the amused reply.

?I am,? Iante replied in earnest. ?You?re not an idiot. You?re where I want to be. Helping people with a fancy title and the respect that comes from it.?

?You?ll get there ? especially if you?re willing to go along with my productivity plan.? Thad returned to his seat with three books in his grasp. ?You must be bored brainless in the hospital. If you?re not ready to open up to your friends, that?s perfectly alright. I won?t force you to lay out your emotions for everyone to see, but in this room, Iante, you?re not under social obligation to make me think you?re coping. I promise to allow you the use of my miniature library here ? as many books as you want, as often, and any questions you have along with the texts even after you?re out of this building permanently ? if you promise me that you?ll make the same progress every day that you have today.?

?I can?t promise that,? the blond answered, morose. ?Sometimes I really just can?t get the words out. It?s like I?ve forgotten English.?

?Sometimes progress isn?t telling me your life history and what you feel about it,? Whittock nodded. ?You can promise whatever you like. I just need to know that you?re going to trust that I?m here to help you.?

?I can?t.? Iante sounded utterly broken when he muttered the two simple syllables. ?I can?t trust you.?

?I don?t need you to trust me. I just need you to trust that I?m going to do everything I can to help. For the hour a day you see me, I?m your doctor and I?m the only one you need to talk to. Can you do that for me, Iante??

?Just? just trust that you?re here to help me and that I only have to talk to you? Even if it?s just about the books?? the patient added, voice tinged with hope.

?Even if it?s just to talk about the books,? Whittock promised. ?First we?ll work on communicating. Then, if you still don?t feel like you can talk to your natural support group, your friends, you and I can talk about what happened. Or anything else.?

The doctor handed a book to Iante and raised an eyebrow.

?I?ve got twenty minutes until my next patient arrives, Iante. Mind filling our usual silence with some talk about your pathology training??

For the first time in three weeks, four days and nineteen hours, the blond smiled.

StumbleUpon Ads Get Facelift As Twitter and Facebook Ad ...

StumbleUpon?s Paid Discovery ad program has just received a new look. With other social networks like Twitter and Facebook investing heavily in new ad products, and increasingly blurring the line between organic social activity and paid promoted activity, StumbleUpon?doesn?t want to be left behind.

Now, the ad system has received a facelift. ?Mainly these are cosmetic changes, with no real substantive changes to the ad program. ?Instead, advertisers get a new way to view and manage their account activity.

The?new features?include a new dashboard, a consolidated graph for campaign information, and new options for active and archived campaigns. Currently, advertisers have the ability to switch over to the new Paid Discovery dashboard once they?ve logged in, but they can still switch back to the old look. ?Here?s one screen in the new dashboard (showing effective cost per visitor or CPV):

StumbleUpon Paid Discovery

How StumbleUpon Paid Discovery Ads Work?

If you are not familiar with StumbleUpon, it?s a relatively straightforward social content-sharing site. ?StumbleUpon ?guides users to browse through (?stumble?) sites and Web pages that have been shared and recommended by others. You click a button on a toolbar or app, and you arrive on a page that someone else has shared, according to your interests. ?Rinse and repeat.

The advertising?feature works much like the organic content sharing, as far as users are concerned. ?Advertisers can pay to have their website?s page show up in the stream of content that users see while browsing. Advertisers can choose a target market, i.e., pick the category and who sees their page by specifying interests and demographic data. ?Users will see Web pages that have been organically shared and also see pages that are inserted by advertisers who pay to have them displayed.

The Competition for Ad Money Heats Up

Twitter and Facebook have been turning up the heat under their ad offerings. ?As those sites mature, investors demand returns ? and that means ad revenue.

StumbleUpon ? Ahead of Its Time

StumbleUpon was way ahead of its time. ?The social sharing site has been around since at least 2002. ?StumbleUpon Ads were introduced six years ago, back in 2006. ? Along the way, the ads were rebranded as?StumbleUpon Paid Discovery.

In the beginning, StumbleUpon advertisers paid 5 cents per click. Today there are two pricing levels. ?Standard is 10 cents per click. ?Premium (which guarantees top priority in displaying your page) is 25 cents per click.

Still, when you compare that with the cost of Google AdWords, the clicks are inexpensive. ?StumbleUpon clicks are less focused on a conversion, however. ?Unlike with Google or other search ads, the user is not already looking for what the advertiser offers ? think of it as more of an unexpected ?discovery,? ?hence the name.

What StumbleUpon Ads Are Good For

If you?re trying to create awareness and drive traffic directly to your site by a young social audience, StumbleUpon Paid Discovery ads have a place. ?A few years ago we tested StumbleUpon ads and found that they did indeed drive traffic ?relatively inexpensively. ?We mainly used them for a site we had purchased, BizSugar.com, to increase awareness by an audience already attuned to blogs (BizSugar.com appeals to bloggers and many of the pages shared on StumbleUpon are blogs).

StumbleUpon ads are also good for new product launches, especially technology products that appeal to today?s young tech-hungry consumers. ?StumbleUpon displays the Web page directly to the user (not an ad they have to click on) ? ?good for reaching audiences who normally ignore ads.

Finally, StumbleUpon ads can also trigger a viral organic ?stumble? experience, leading to much higher traffic at no additional cost, as outlined in this post by Darren Rowse.

But the question is: ?can StumbleUpon still compete with social networks like Twitter and Facebook that keep pushing the envelope in new ways?

Contec Holdings, Bain-Owned Firm, Could File For Bankruptcy As Early As This Week

Well, this could be a little bit awkward.

A company owned by Bain Capital may file for bankruptcy this week, the very week that Bain?s former CEO Mitt Romney is slated to accept the Republican nomination for president, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Bain bought Contec, a company that repairs cable equipment, in 2008, after Romney left the firm. As part of the deal, Bain reportedly saddled Contec with about 60 percent debt -- a relatively small level of debt compared to other leveraged buyouts -- but it was too much for Contec to survive the financial crisis and a drop in cable subscribers.

The bankruptcy is just the latest painful chapter for the company. Three summers ago, Contec laid off more than 100 employees and moved production to Mexico, according to the Albany Times Union.

Romney?s tenure at Bain, and the private equity firm?s strategy of buying up companies, has been a point of controversy during the campaign, so news that one of Bain?s companies may be filing for bankruptcy during the Republican National Convention likely won?t help. Bain has been criticized for pushing profitable companies into bankruptcy and for forcing layoffs at struggling firms.

For his part, Romney has said that his experience running Bain prepared him to reinvigorate the nation's economy. He argued that his time spent turning around less-than-successful companies would help him ?as president to fix our economy, create jobs and get things done in Washington,? in an op-ed in the WSJ earlier this month.

Still, the stories of some of those turnarounds have been a flashpoint for controversy on the campaign trail. After Bain acquired medical company Dade International as part of a Romney-approved deal in the 1990s, the company more than doubled its sales and brought Bain a huge return on its investment, The New York Times reports. But the boost came at a cost; Bain encouraged Dade to take on more debt, a move that accelerated its path towards bankruptcy. The company also laid off 1,700 workers.

GS Industries, a steelmaker in Charlotte, North Carolina, suffered a similar fate under Bain?s watch. Though Bain turned a 100 percent profit on its investment in the company, the firm saddled the steelmaker with so much debt that the company had to lay off 2,000 workers, according to the Raleigh News and Observer. It eventually filed for bankruptcy.

Mexico probes why federal cops fired at US gov car

(AP) ? Mexican authorities are trying to sort out why a U.S. Embassy vehicle was shot up by federal police on a rural back road in mountains south of the capital, leaving two U.S. government workers wounded.

Officials from both nations said the federal officers were chasing criminals Friday morning when a hail of bullets was fired at the embassy sport utility vehicle, but the accounts left many questions unanswered.

The two American workers were taken to a hospital in the nearby resort city of Cuernavaca. One had a gunshot wound in his leg and the other was wounded in the stomach and a hand, said a Mexican government official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Hospital officials in Cuernavaca said the wounded were later transferred to a Mexico City hospital in stable condition.

The U.S. Embassy did not release the names of the injured workers, who it said were heading to a military training base south of Mexico City. Its statement said the employees and a Mexican naval captain traveling with them were fired on by a group of men, and were chased when they tried to escape. The naval officer was not seriously injured.

Mexico's federal police agency acknowledged that its own officers fired on the embassy's SUV, which appeared to be armored and has diplomatic plates. It said the officers were in the area looking for criminals, but it did not explain what happened.

Its statement said at least four vehicles fired at the embassy vehicle on a road south of the capital, but it did not clarify whether any or all of them were federal police units. Federal police spokesmen did not respond to The Associated Press requesting further comment.

A U.S. official who was briefed on the shooting said later that all the shots were fired by federal police.

Mexican prosecutors said in a statement late Friday that 12 officers based in Mexico City were being held for questioning. Officers based in the capital have jurisdiction only in Mexico City and in four suburbs of neighboring Mexico State, not in Cuernavaca.

The embassy employees were on their way to do training or related work at a military base, the U.S. official said.

"Apparently the police were looking for some bad guys and they ran into each other," said the official, who agreed to discuss the incident only if his name was not used. "It looks like it was just a bad mistake ... they just shot and kept shooting."

The shooting broke out in an area that has been used by common criminals, drug gangs and leftist rebels in the past.

Mexican officials said the Americans' vehicle initially was fired on by a carload of gunmen who first displayed their weapons as the embassy SUV drove along a stretch of dirt road off a highway that connects Mexico City to Cuernavaca. The U.S. driver of the Toyota tried to escape, but three other vehicles joined the original one in pursuing them down the dirt road and onto the highway.

Passengers in all four vehicles fired, and the Mexican naval captain called for help, government officials said. Federal police officers and Mexican soldiers then showed up on the road.

The SUV stopped on the highway, but it wasn't clear if the driver was halted by the chasers or stopped because of the wounds.

The vehicle was riddled with bullets, most concentrated around the passenger-side window. The area was cordoned off and guarded by more than 100 heavily armed marines and soldiers, and the highway was closed for hours. Investigators examined what appeared to be shell casings.

The U.S. Embassy said it was helping Mexico's government in its investigation of the incident. It said the wounded were not agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration or the FBI, but officials for neither country identified what agency they work for.

"They are receiving appropriate medical care and are in stable condition. We have no further information to share at this time," said Victoria Nuland, a State Department spokeswoman in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas who closely follows the affairs with Mexico, said both countries appeared to be working together to find out what went wrong.

"If the Mexicans are cooperating with U.S. officials to find out exactly what happened here then I don't think this will affect the U.S.-Mexico relationship," he said.

Attacks on diplomatic personnel in Mexico were once considered rare, but this was the third shooting incident in two years.

In 2011, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was killed and another wounded in a drug gang shooting in northern Mexico.

A drug-gang shooting in 2010 in the border city of Ciudad Juarez killed a U.S. consulate employee, her husband and another man.

While Mexico City has largely been spared the drug violence that hits other parts of the country, Cuernavaca has been the scene of drug gang turf battles involving remnants of the Beltran Leyva cartel.
