Yuni, a small remote town located in Japan?s northernmost island of Hokkaido will begin selling land for 120 yen per square meter. The said town is faced with a declining population and this move is expected to attract new residents.
The population of Yuni is now about 5,900 but according to a town official, the population decreases by 100 people a year. He adds that the plan will help stop the town?s declining population and will give emphasis on the town?s features, which include the largest herb garden and a hot springs resort. The price of land per square meter was also set to commemorate the town?s 120th anniversary.
Applications will be accepted through the end of August 2012, and purchasers will be picked by lottery. So far, there are already 160-170 inquiries for the said land sale. One of the requirements needed by expected buyers is the permanent residence visa and an agreement to build a house on the purchased land within three years and live in it.
