Woodlawn, Baltimore County, storm damage
People who have lost valuable medications due to the storms and subsequent power outages this week can get help if their health insurance won't cover the replacement costs.
Tens of thousands of people have spent several days in the miserable heat without electricity, and many medications, including those that need refrigerated, have been ruined.?
Since some insurance providers aren't covering replacement costs, the Maryland Insurance Administration said people can call 800-492-6116, ext. 2340, for help. The state insurance commissioner this week temporarily lifted restrictions on when people's medications can be refilled.

The MIA is also reminding homeowners who have had to move out of their homes due to damage to review their homeowners or renters insurance policies because the costs of that move, including meals, may be covered under Additional Living Expenses or Loss if Use provisions. Officials said if that is the case, make sure to keep copies of all your receipts to prove your claim.
MIA officials said some insurance companies also will recoup the cost of lost food when the power goes out for an extended time, as well as some of the cost of tree removal. Officials said tree removal policies usually only cover up to $500.
"While it is important to report claims to your insurance carrier immediately, you should also be aware that most carriers consider your claims history when determining whether to renew your insurance policy," said Insurance Commissioner Therese Goldsmith.
She said filing three or more weather-related claims within a three-year period may lead some insurance companies to drop some homeowners' policies at its next renewal date.
"You should review your policy carefully to make certain that you understand coverage limits and what deductible you must pay for your claim," Goldsmith said.
