MADRID (AP) ? Spanish shepherds led a flock of more than 2,000 sheep through central Madrid on Sunday in defense of ancient grazing, migration and droving rights threatened by urban sprawl and modern agricultural practices.

Many tourists and residents were surprised to see traffic cut to allow the ovine parade to bleat its way across some of Madrid's most upscale urban streets.

The right to use droving routes that wind across land that was open fields and woodland before Madrid grew from a rural hamlet to the great metropolis it is today has existed since at least 1273.

Every year, a handful of shepherds defend the right and, following an age-old tradition, on Sunday paid 25 maravedis ? coins first minted in the 11th century ? to city hall to use the crossing.

Shepherds have a right to use 78,000 miles (125,000 kilometers) of paths for seasonal livestock migrations from cool highland pastures in summer to warmer and more protected lowland grazing in winter.

The movement is called transhumance and in Spain up until recently involved close to a million animals a year, mostly sheep and cattle.

Modern farming practices are however increasingly confining animals to barns, because shepherding is costly, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, which has been promoting the colorful annual Transhumance Fiesta in Madrid since 1994.

Madrid became an important urban center when King Philip II chose it as the capital of his vast empire in 1561. Some paths have been used for more than 800 years and modern-day Madrid has sprawled to engulf two north-south routes. One that crosses Puerta del Sol ? Madrid's equivalent of New York's Times Square ? dates back to 1372.

Spaniards are proud of their centuries-old sheep rearing traditions and hold the native Merino breed of sheep in particular esteem. Merinos have gone on to form the backbone of important wool industries in places such as Australia and South America.

Madison Bumgarner pitched two-hit ball over seven innings, the Giants threw out a runner at the plate and then took advantage of a bunt that stayed fair to push across the go-ahead run in a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night that gave them a?World?Series?edge.

"It's a lot less stressful for sure," Bumgarner said, "but at the same time I don't think we can stop pushing or we're going to find ourselves in the same spot we've been in in the last two?series."

And that would be on the brink of elimination.

San Francisco lost its first two games against Cincinnati, then became the first baseball team to overcome an 0-2 deficit in a best-of-five?series?by winning three straight on the road. Then the Giants fell into 1-3 hole against St. Louis before rallying to reach the?World?Series.

"It's great to get off to a good start," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We don't, believe me, take anything for granted."

Detroit police gear up for World Series crowds?

DETROIT

Police in Detroit have a plan to make sure the area around Comerica Park is safe for the thousands of baseball fans coming downtown to watch the World Series. But city officials are not tipping their hand on what they're going to do.

Interim Police Chief Chester Logan told reporters Friday that more than 20 law enforcement agencies will work with his officers when the Tigers host the San Francisco Giants beginning Saturday in Detroit for game 3 of the best-of-seven series.

Logan said "close to 100,000 people" will be downtown Sunday for the Detroit Lions afternoon football game at Ford Field and game 4 of the World Series that night.

He also said no officers would be pulled from Detroit neighborhoods for patrols in and around downtown.

Credit Suisse to cut $1 billion more costs as profits fall

ZURICH (Reuters) - Credit Suisse will cut an extra 1 billion Swiss francs ($1.1 billion) of costs, including axing more jobs, as part of efforts to bolster its profits and capital position.

Volatile financial markets, a dearth of deals and tighter regulations in the wake of the 2007-9 financial crisis are forcing investment banks to slash costs, and the euro zone debt crisis has pushed many to cut back even more.

The Swiss bank said on Thursday third-quarter net profit fell 63 percent to 254 million francs, missing analysts' average forecast of 370 million. The quarter was hit by 1.05 billion francs in charges, mainly linked to its own debt.

However, Credit Suisse stock rose 2.6 percent after higher profits from the investment banking division, which benefited from a pickup in bond trading.

That unit offset Credit Suisse's private banking business, where margins shrank and fresh funds won from wealthy clients missed the bank's own targets by far.

The fixed-income recovery has already been noted by U.S. investment banks and could also boost European peers like Deutsche Bank and Barclays when they report quarterly results next week.

Credit Suisse said it was targeting 4 billion francs in cost savings by 2015, up from a goal of 3 billion francs it set in July and an earlier figure of 2 billion.

UBS, which reports quarterly results next Tuesday, is also expected to announce job cuts to protect profits as it withdraws from riskier investment banking areas which soak up large sums of capital.

Credit Suisse's investment bank lifted revenue 66 percent on the year, while costs edged 5 percent higher, in large part due to provisions for mortgage lawsuits. The unit benefited from a surge in sales and trading of fixed-income products such as credit and securitized products.

Mathers said business trends in the first weeks of the fourth quarter were similar to the third.

Credit Suisse's private bank didn't fare as well as the investment bank, however. The unit's revenue fell on the quarter and on the year, partly due to a traditional lull in client activity during the summer holiday months.

Spartan swimming meet at aquatics center is canceled - Bainbridge ...

Today's girls swimming meet between Bainbridge High and Holy Names Academy at the Bainbridge Island Aquatics Center has been canceled.

The cancelation was not due to last week's meltdown of the heating unit for the Ray Williamson Pool, however.

The heating unit, which was destroyed by a fire on Oct. 15, has since been replaced, said John DeMeyer, recreation services director for the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District.

Instead, blame the cancelation on a faulty filter.

"They had a problem with one of the filters and it was leaking material past it," DeMeyer said.

Disabled Veterans National Foundation Awards Grant to ?Operation We Care?

Funds will assist the organization in providing financial aid to veterans in need.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 23, 2012

Disabled Veterans National Foundation (http://www.dvnf.org), a non-profit veterans service organization that focuses on helping men and women who serve and return home wounded or sick after defending our safety and our freedom, is sending a $5,000 grant to the Veteran?s Freedom Center (VFC) of Dubuque, Iowa for its ?Operation We Care? program. These funds will assist the organization in providing financial aid to veterans in need.

The Veterans Freedom Center provides a place for veterans to socialize and network, boasting a gathering facility with a wood shop, exercise room, and conference room, as well as a TV lounge and game room. In addition, the organization assists veterans with supportive services and other resources.

The ?Operation We Care? program of VFC is designed to give financial aid to veterans in the tri-state area. This nonprofit program distributed $9,000 in assistance in 2011, but has already surpassed that total by $4,000 this year. VFC stated that this influx in requests can be mainly attributed to the return of so many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. They have also seen increased assistance to female veterans needing help with rent, mortgage, or other family-related expenses.

?This superb organization is lending assistance and camaraderie to veterans in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin,? stated Precilla Wilkewitz, President of DVNF. ?This program aligns perfectly with the mission of DVNF, and we are pleased to be able to contribute to the Veterans Freedom Center?s continued success.?

The $5,000 grant will be used to meet the growing demand of the Operation We Care program. DVNF wants to ensure that no veteran that turns to VFC for assistance will be turned down due to lack of funds.

Apple has announced a new version of iBooks which will be available later today. New features include better integration with iCloud, enhanced sharing options, and continuous scrolling when reading. All of the books that you own will appear on your bookshelf, even if they are not on your device, just like the current iOS music app for iTunes Match users. Additionally, the new version supports over 40 languages, including Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. The update will be available in the App Store soon.

Microsoft Video Shows Surface Touch Cover Design Process

A large part of what makes Microsoft?s Surface tablets so appealing is the thought Microsoft put into designing the tablet?s various covers. Whether you?re going with the Touch Cover or the Type Cover, they both look right at home on the tablet, and greatly enhance its functionality. Since learning just what kind of premium price these options demand, we may be suffering from a bit of sticker shock, but that doesn?t detract from how cool they look. If you?re interested in getting a little insight into how these guys came to be, Microsoft just released a short video talking about the Touch Cover design process.

The basic pressure-sensitive key elements that make up the Touch Cover have been in development since all the way back in 2003, but it took the Surface to act as the catalyst to mold that technology into the finished product we now see. Microsoft?s confident that the Touch Cover should deliver a typing experience that?s on-par with laptop keyboards; we?ll withhold judgment until getting a chance to try one ourselves, but it?s reassuring to know that even if the Touch Cover doesn?t end up feeling quite right for everyone, there?s always the only-slightly-thicker Type Cover to fall back on.
