PSA: TurboTax on Android is free through Sunday if you start your taxes before then

If you've ever filed your taxes on an iPad, you know Intuit's TurboTax app is free to download, but that you'll have to pay up once you're ready to submit those returns. But, in an effort to promote its newish apps for Android tablets and the Kindle Fire, the company's giving the entire number-crunching cow away for free -- at least through this weekend. Just download between tomorrow (Friday) and Sunday and make sure you start your taxes before Monday (it's okay if you finish them later). To be clear, this includes both federal and state-level taxes, which you'd normally pay for separately for $29.99 and up. Another quid pro quo: this won't work on handsets, even though the Kindle runs a customized version of Android 2.3. If you own a tablet it should run smoothly on Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich, though. In any case, to those of you who've been putting off your taxes, happy downloading, procrastinators.

Reports: Wife turned in suspect in powder letters case

By msnbc.com staff

In the end, police say, his wife turned him in. Christopher Lee Carlson, a nurse from Vancouver, Wash., pleaded not guilty Wednesday to mailing about 100 menacing letters to members of Congress, news outlets and comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, the Oregonian newspaper reported.

Investigators were stumped at first ? the envelopes, containing a powder and postmarked from Portland, Ore., in late February, had a phony return address.

The letters said ?there is a 10 percent chance you have been just exposed to a lethal pathogen.? They were signed "MAB."

Threatening letters claim ?pathogens? sent to senators, media

But then, in early March, Carlson and his wife were driving in Portland, according to The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash., which cited a police report. Carlson pointed at the post office and said he was worried that they had surveillance cameras pointed at them.

?Oh no, you didn?t send those letters, did you?? Adrienne Carlson said, according to The Columbian. The police report said that he told her he had and the white substance was a combination of celery salt and corn starch.

The report said he told her that he planned to send more letters that would contain lye, a caustic substance that can badly irritate skin.

When police received a report of domestic disturbance at the Carlsons' home, Adrienne Carlson told an officer that her husband had left her and that she thought he might have sent the letters, The Columbian reported. ?????

On March 9, according to the Oregonian, a federal grand jury in Portland indicted Carlson, finding that he had mailed letters to House Speaker John Boehner and Sen. Barbara Mikulski, a Democrat from Maryland. ???

Relatives told the Oregonian that Carlson, who had spent time in psychiatric units after reporting suicidal thoughts, was disappointed because President Barack Obama had not lived up to his expectations. ?

Exclusive: Linkin Park Ready To 'Burn' With New Single, Album

'We worked our butts off to create this record,' Chester Bennington tells MTV News of fast-evolving follow-up to A Thousand Suns.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by James Lacsina

Last year, when Linkin Park told MTV News they were already beginning work on the follow-up to A Thousand Suns, it was noteworthy for several reasons — chief among them being that this is a band that likes to take their time with things.

But it looks like all that is changing. On Tuesday, MTV News was on the set of the video for "Burn It Down," the first single from their (still-untitled) new album. So, yes, this is really happening, and yes, it's happening soon, as LP's Chester Bennington explained.

"Well, we promised our fans that we'd put out records faster, and that's what we're doing. We figured out a way to condense our cycle, so to speak, by ... continuing to write, trying to keep the creative ball rolling as often as possible," he said. "We wrote some of the stuff on the road during the last tour, and instead of ... touring for two years, we toured for about a year, we came home, jumped right back into the studio and just worked our butts off to create this record.

"And this album is a really great representation of where we're at right now as a band," Bennington continued. "We're kind of really comfortable with our early nü-metal days, and we're really comfortable with where we're at in our more contemporary version of ourselves, so this is a good representation of that comfort level with our own identity as a band."

As for "Burn It Down," well, Bennington said the band chose it as the first single mostly because it showcases everything they're hoping to accomplish on the new disc: a combination of their crackling, crushing past and their ethereal, electro-tinged present. And while we can't reveal any details about the "Burn" video just yet, we'll let Bennington tell you all about the new song:

"All of our songs take these really big creative turns and twists throughout the process, so sometimes songs will start out as a melody or some musical chord progressions. ... Other times, they'll start out as beats, and the next thing you know they kind of evolve over the course of the making of the album," he said. "But what's interesting about this track is the really high energy and the really strong electronic melodies and hooks kind of set this song apart, which is why we chose it as our first single.

"We've kind of drifted into a lot more kind of electronic, digital feel, but what's interesting about this record is that a lot of songs — people might pick up on this — but a lot of the songs kind of were started as these folk-driven songs," he continued. "So there's a very organic element to the record, as well as a very modern, kind of futuristic element too. We can't wait for our fans to hear it."

What are you expecting from Linkin Park's new music? Let us know in the comments!

(AP) ? An AWOL soldier's simple scheme to defraud one of the richest men in the world has landed him in federal custody, according to a criminal complaint.

In the complaint unsealed Monday, federal investigators allege Brandon Lee Price changed the address on a bank account held by billionaire Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, then had a debit card sent to his Pittsburgh home so he could use it for payments on a delinquent Armed Forces Bank account and personal expenses.

Price called Citibank in January and changed the address on an account held by Allen from Seattle to Pittsburgh, then called back three days later to say he'd lost his debit card and asked for a new one to be sent to him, an FBI investigator wrote in a criminal complaint filed in February.

The card was used to attempt a $15,000 Western Union transaction and make a $658.81 payment on the Armed Forces Bank loan account the day it was activated, according to the complaint. Surveillance footage also captured him attempting purchases at a video game store and a dollar store, authorities alleged.

Investigators found Price was listed as Absent Without Leave from the Army and wanted as a deserter, authorities said in the complaint. He was arrested March 2 and ordered detained until April 2 unless the Army takes him into custody.

David Postman, a spokesman for Allen, said the fraud was detected by the bank, who alerted law enforcement officials. The only transaction ? out of four listed in the complaint totaling $15,936.99 ? that apparently made it through was the loan payment, Postman said.

While the financial loss is comparatively small, it shows the importance of the issue of identity theft prevention.

"Clearly, it's a reminder that anyone can be a victim of this," Postman said.

The complaint doesn't specify how Price allegedly changed the address on the account. A phone message left for Citibank was not immediately returned Tuesday.

An email to Price's public defender wasn't immediately returned, nor was a voicemail left at a phone number for Price listed in the complaint.

Allen made the bulk of his fortune founding Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975. He left the company in 1983 and now owns the Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Trail Blazers. He is the founder and chairman of Vulcan Inc., the company that manages his business and charitable undertakings. Forbes estimates Allen's net worth at $14.2 billion.

Accounts with other credit card companies may have also been targeted, but none of Allen's other accounts were compromised, Postman said.

"It certainly is a surprise and reason for everyone to make sure that all that stuff is properly cared for and monitored," Postman said.

Just under 280,000 cases of identity theft were reported in 2011, according to the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection. That includes complaints through the Better Business Bureau and state attorney general offices and other law enforcement agencies.

WPXI-TV first reported Price's arrest.

Supreme Court Throws Out Human Gene Patents

thomst sends this quote from an Associated Press report:
"The Supreme Court on Monday threw out a lower court ruling allowing human genes to be patented, a topic of enormous interest to cancer researchers, patients and drug makers. The court overturned patents belonging to Myriad Genetics Inc. of Salt Lake City on two genes linked to increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The justices' decision sends the case back down to the federal appeals court in Washington that handles patent cases. The high court said it sent the case back for rehearing because of its decision in another case last week saying that the laws of nature are unpatentable. In that case, the court unanimously threw out patents on a Prometheus Laboratories, Inc., test that could help doctors set drug doses for autoimmune diseases like Crohn's disease."

Check Out These Handy Tips Before Starting Your Home Improvement

Choosing to improve a home is quite sensible in several ways. However, many home improvements can be a lot of work. The advice given here can help you make your house a better home, whether you simply want to improve your living space or if you have an eye on your home?s eventual resale value.

Stay on an even keel! Diminish the noises inside your house. If you have a fan that is wobbling or noisy, it probably needs to be balanced. You can just simply adjust the screws on the blades and on the motor. While you are adjusting those screws, thoroughly clean the fan and the blades as even a small amount of dust can cause your fan to be out of balance.

Stucco is a good option for outdoor siding. Stucco can be long lasting but it usually requires professional installation.

You may be able to make an improvement that will reduce your water bill through making plumbing more efficient. You can decrease the amount of water used by installing low-flow shower heads, water heaters and commodes. These types of fixtures make your home appear modern and environmentally friendly, as well as save you money on your bills.

Before beginning a home improvement project in your kitchen, fireplace or any part of your house with a gas line, be sure to turn off the gas at the shutoff location before starting. You must be very careful with these types of projects. You can be seriously injured or start a fire during the project.

Get motivated by making improvements you love. Including your own personal touch can make any project special.

See if the contractors you are interested in have the proper licenses for your state. Every state has a licensing board website you can use to check this information. Alternatively, you can call the board and ask. Unlicensed contractors are either bad at their job and lost their license, or aren?t real contractors at all.

If you are remodeling a home for re-sale, stick to the outside repairs before the internal ones that no one can see. A poor external appearance can be bad for sale prices, as well as the length of time a house stays on the market. Things like plumbing and heating can be tackled later.

You can avoid damage to your house?s foundation by directing rainwater away from the house. Try to make your yard slope in the direction of the street or make your downspout longer.

One important home improvement tip is to make sure that water runs away from your house when it storms. A simple fix would be to use a longer downspout to drain water further from your home, or you may need to increase the slope from your foundation to the street by grading.

Be sure to wear proper safety gear whenever you find yourself working around heavy equipment. That includes everything from back harnesses to gloves, helmets and safety goggles.

Make sure you get your plumbing and electric squared away before anything else. Plumbing and electrical repairs often require inner wall access, so plan these repairs first before you paint walls or do renovations. If you have your walls open already it will make it easy to do any other renovations.

A licensed real estate agent can be an excellent source for home improvement advice regarding adding value to your home. They?re in the market everyday and are able to help you decide which upgrades are desirable for buyers in your area.

Now that you know of some tips that you can use, you are now ready to start your own home improvement project. Make your renovation and home improvement ideas a reality through the use of your creativity and keep disasters at bay with the aid of the provided tips.

McDonald's new CEO Thompson a study in contrasts

(Reuters) - Don Thompson's journey to the top spot at McDonald's Corp started in front of a computer, not a deep fryer.

For many executives at McDonald's, including retiring CEO Jim Skinner, the first rung on the corporate ladder began in a restaurant -- logging long hours flipping burgers, bagging fries and manning busy drive-thru windows.

Thompson, an electrical engineer recruited in 1990 from the fighter jet maker that is now Northrop Grumman Corp , got his start designing robotic equipment for transporting food and making control circuits for cooking equipment.

People who know the man set to become McDonald's first African-American chief executive on July 1 say he possesses the relatively rare mix of social prowess and sophisticated mathematical skills.

"Don is very intelligent, he's very strategic -- and he's tactful. You don't often find tact in the people who are intelligent and strategic," said John Kendall, a Chicago patent attorney who met Thompson at an event for the historic black fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha when they were attending neighboring colleges, and also worked with him at Northrop.

As the new chief of the world's biggest fast-food chain, Thompson, 48, faces the challenge of adding to nearly nine years of sales gains at established restaurants. Wall Street gives him high marks for overseeing the successful U.S. McCafe roll-out of lattes, frappes and other beverages. He also flexed his operational muscle in various U.S. roles along his path, measuring store performance with an engineer's zeal and using the resulting statistics to tweak operations.

But some investors worry that Thompson, who has never had an international posting, is taking the helm at a time when the company's overseas business has never been more important. McDonald's faces a potential slowdown in debt-troubled Europe, the company's biggest market for sales, and is pushing to grow in places like China, where rival Yum Brands Inc has a big lead.

"He just doesn't have as diverse of a set of experiences as some of his predecessors," said Janna Sampson, co-chief investment officer at OakBrook Investments, who has met Thompson. However, she said the company's deep management bench likely would compensate: "I'm not troubled to the point where I would get out of the stock."

McDonald's declined to make Thompson available for an interview.

NICE GUY MAKES GOOD

Thompson is described as soft-spoken without being a pushover, approachable and humble. Friends say he's given to broad smiles, bear hugs and hearty handshakes.

At Northrop, his league basketball team knew him as a player who cleared the way for his friends to shine.

Today, he is poised to become one of the most powerful U.S. CEOs -- and one of the few who are African-American.

NBA star LeBron James, who is a forward for the Miami Heat and is featured in McDonald's commercials, has high praise for Thompson. James, who has worked directly with the new CEO, told Reuters that Thompson is an "inspiration" and said McDonald's is in good hands.

"Don is an amazing leader who will make an incredible CEO. He is a friend, mentor, and business partner," James said in an email.

Roland Martin, a reporter, CNN political analyst and fellow member of Alpha Phi Alpha, has known Thompson since the mid-2000s and calls the incoming CEO "one of the most down-to-earth brothers I've met."

Martin has seen Thompson, now McDonald's chief operating officer, talk nuts-and-bolts with franchisees. He's also been on the receiving end of the executive's requests to talk about McDonald's new oatmeal and espresso drinks on Twitter.

"He's really a personable guy -- serious about his job, but certainly loves to have fun," said Martin, who a couple of years ago spent a night hopping between two Atlanta parties with him.

"We were dancing ... our wives were having a good time. Don wasn't the guy who was standing on the walls saying, 'No, no, no, no ... I'm on the path to be CEO of McDonald's.' He was right there."

STICKING WITH THE PLAN

Thompson moved from engineering to operations after just a few years at McDonald's. He rose quickly through the ranks, holding key roles in the company's West and Midwest divisions before being named McDonald's USA president in 2006.

Four years later, he was promoted to chief operating officer -- a position seen as a stepping stone to the top job.

Analysts and McDonald's both say Thompson played an important part in executing the company's "Plan to Win", which has resulted in its best-ever financial performance. That strategy has included extending operating hours, sprucing up restaurants and expanding menus to include value-priced food, "premium" hamburgers and espresso drinks.

Separately, McDonald's has addressed concern over its role in the U.S. obesity crisis by adding a serving of apples and shrinking the french fry portion in its Happy Meals for children.

Still, some worry that Thompson may not fully appreciate how things like menu changes play out in the real world.

"There's general concern that he doesn't have any real restaurant experience," said Richard Adams, a former McDonald's franchise director and restaurant owner, who now advises McDonald's franchisees.

Sticking to McDonald's current business strategy will be crucial to maintaining the chain's lead over fast-food competitors and supporting the company's stock price, which is trading near record levels.

"If Don doesn't try to change too many things too fast, he'll be O.K.," Adams said.

NATO protesters appeal to Chicago officials over parade route

Updated 5:30 p.m.

(Crain's) ? Activists appealed Chicago's denial of a permit for a protest march from Daley Plaza to the site of the NATO summit on May 20 after rejecting a new route proposed by city officials today.

Andy Thayer, an organizer with the Coalition Against the NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda (CANG8), said the group's request was identical to a route already approved by the city for May 19.

That parade permit was approved when the G-8 summit also was to meet in Chicago. But the White House moved the G-8 to Camp David, leaving protesters with permits for a day when no meetings will be held.

A hearing on CANG8's appeal is scheduled for next Tuesday at 10 am before the city's Department of Administrative Hearings, he said.

(See related story: "NATO protesters eye court battle over Chicago march permit.")

CANG8 wants marchers to assemble at Daley Plaza, in the heart of the Loop, then march down State Street because it's more convenient and more in the public eye. The city wanted the assembly to take place at the Petrillo Music Shell in the middle of Grant Park, then march south along Columbus Drive and Michigan Avenue, avoiding the Loop entirely.

Mr. Thayer said an alternate route proposed today by the city would go through part of the Loop, making the march longer and more circuitous. It would have taken marchers from Grant Park north to Monroe Street, then west to Michigan Avenue, north to Madison Street and over to State Street before heading south toward McCormick Place.

"The city is trying to accommodate our desire for an audience for our First Amendment message," Mr. Thayer acknowledged, but "it's adding extra mileage to a march route that's already pretty long. It's just not practical."

Mr. Thayer said the city claims the route his group wants won't work on the 20th because it goes through the central downtown area and there won't be enough on-duty police officers to handle the traffic congestion. He said the city's addition of the phrase "on duty" to the criteria set forth in the parade ordinance, after the original permit was granted, gives the city too much leeway to deny a permit.

In its March 15 denial of the permit request for May 20, the city said that a march on that date would exacerbate "significant traffic impediments" that will be created by motorcades for about 5,000 NATO delegates and staff, and about 50 heads of state.

"Mr. Thayer requested a date change for his permit to Sunday May 20th, and for the past week the city has been working with him to accommodate his revised application," a spokesman for the city law department said in a statement. "The city is committed to allowing his organization to express their 1st Amendment rights while balancing it with our obligation to keep the participants safe as they express their rights and to keep the city as a whole safe. ?Unfortunately, we were unable to reach an agreement and Mr. Thayer will not accept the alternate route proposed by the city."

Mercury Surprises: Tiny Planet Has Strange Innards and Active Past

The small, sun-scorched planet Mercury has an interior unlike that of any other rocky planet in our solar system and a surprisingly dynamic history, two new studies suggest.

Using observations from?NASA's Messenger spacecraft?in orbit around Mercury, researchers have found that the planet's huge iron core is even larger than they had thought, and it's likely overlain with a solid shell of iron and sulfur ? a layered structure not known to exist on Earth, Venus or Mars. And there's more: Mercury appears to have remained geologically active for a surprisingly large chunk of its evolutionary history, researchers said.

"Many scientists expected Mercury, being a small planet only slightly larger than the moon, to have cooled off not long after it formed and to be?essentially 'dead' for most of its evolution," said Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, lead author of one of the new studies and a co-author on the other. "But it appears that Mercury had an exciting and active?middle age."

Mercury from above

The $446 million Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) spacecraft launched in 2004. It then took a circuitous route to the solar system's innermost planet, becoming the first probe ever to orbit Mercury in March 2011. [Latest Mercury Photos from Messenger]

Since then, Messenger has been zipping around the baking-hot planet ? which orbits the sun from just 36 million miles (58 million kilometers) away, compared to 93 million miles (150 million km) for Earth ? once every 12 hours.

The probe is mapping Mercury's surface?and gathering data on the planet's composition, magnetic environment and tenuous atmosphere, among other features. To date, Messenger has taken nearly 100,000 images and made more than 4 million measurements of the planet's surface, researchers said.

Messenger's original science campaign was designed to last one Earth year, but NASA announced in November that it had granted the spacecraft a one-year mission extension. Messenger officially began its extended mission?earlier this week.

Surprising findings

The two new studies, which both appear in the March 23 issue of the journal Science, detail findings that should help scientists better understand Mercury's murky past.

In one study, researchers used observations made by Messenger's laser altimeter to map the topography of Mercury's northern hemisphere. They found that the range of elevations was smaller than that found on either Mars or the moon.

Messenger also observed that the floors of many Mercury?craters have been tilted substantially. Part of the floor of the Caloris basin ? at 960 miles (1,550 km) across one of the largest impact features in the solar system ? has even been raised above its rim.

These discoveries suggest that internal forces pushed the craters up after the impacts created them, providing strong evidence that Mercury remained geologically active long after its formation. This may surprise many scientists given the planet's small size, Zuber said.

"It is not out of the question that Mercury is still active today," she told SPACE.com via email, "though I note that this is not very likely, and for sure?we have not observed an active eruption or extrusion."

Peering inside

Researchers also estimated Mercury's gravity field by precisely radio-tracking Messenger's movements around the planet.

From these estimates, they determined that Mercury has "mascons," large positive gravity anomalies associated with big impact basins (the term is short for "mass concentrations").

"These were first discovered on the moon in 1968 and caused great problems in the Apollo program?because they tugged low-orbiting spacecraft around and made navigation difficult," Zuber said. "Subsequently mascons were discovered on Mars, and now we find out that Mercury has them, so they appear to be a common feature of terrestrial planetary bodies."

The team's gravity calculations also suggest that Mercury has an iron core that comprises roughly 85 percent of the planet's radius. (For comparison, Earth's iron core covers about half of its radius.) Scientists had suspected the planet's core is big, but many will be surprised that it's so gigantic, Zuber said.

Further, it looks like a layer of solid iron sulfide overlies Mercury's core ? a feature not known to exist on any other terrestrial planet, researchers said.

The new findings should help shed light on Mercury's past, and on the formation and evolution of rocky planets in general. But they also serve to remind scientists that they're in for many more surprises as they continue to probe the solar system's many mysteries, Zuber said.

"With new data, we are continually reminded that when you think you know what's going on you probably don't," she added. "Nature is more perplexing than we can possibly conceive."

Holding a gun makes you think others are too, new research shows

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? Wielding a gun increases a person's bias to see guns in the hands of others, new research from the University of Notre Dame shows.

Notre Dame Associate Professor of Psychology James Brockmole, who specializes in human cognition and how the visual world guides behavior, together with a colleague from Purdue University, conducted the study, which will appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance.

In five experiments, subjects were shown multiple images of people on a computer screen and determined whether the person was holding a gun or a neutral object such as a soda can or cell phone. Subjects did this while holding either a toy gun or a neutral object such as a foam ball.

The researchers varied the situation in each experiment -- such as having the people in the images sometimes wear ski masks, changing the race of the person in the image or changing the reaction subjects were to have when they perceived the person in the image to hold a gun. Regardless of the situation the observers found themselves in, the study showed that responding with a gun biased observers to report "gun present" more than did responding with a ball. Thus, by virtue of affording the subject the opportunity to use a gun, he or she was more likely to classify objects in a scene as a gun and, as a result, to engage in threat-induced behavior, such as raising a firearm to shoot.

"Beliefs, expectations and emotions can all influence an observer's ability to detect and to categorize objects as guns," Brockmole says. "Now we know that a person's ability to act in certain ways can bias their recognition of objects as well, and in dramatic ways. It seems that people have a hard time separating their thoughts about what they perceive and their thoughts about how they can or should act."

The researchers showed that the ability to act is a key factor in the effects by showing that simply letting observers see a nearby gun did not influence their behavior; holding and using the gun was important.

"One reason we supposed that wielding a firearm might influence object categorization stems from previous research in this area, which argues that people perceive the spatial properties of their surrounding environment in terms of their ability to perform an intended action," Brockmole says.

For example, other research has shown that people with broader shoulders tend to perceive doorways to be narrower, and softball players with higher batting averages perceive the ball to be bigger. The blending of perception and action representations could explain, in part, why people holding a gun would tend to assume others are, too.

"In addition to the theoretical implications for event perception and object identification, these findings have practical implications for law enforcement and public safety," Brockmole says.

US reportedly to search again for Amelia Earhart

Anonymous / AP file

Amelia Earhart in an undated photo.

By msnbc.com staff

The State Department plans to join a new effort to find the plane of pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart, 75 years after she mysteriously disappeared over the South Pacific.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will take part in a ceremony Tuesday morning announcing the joint public-private search at the State Department, The Wall Street Journal reports. The event, "Amelia Earhart, a Pacific Legacy," which is pitched as a celebration of the U.S.'s pan-Pacific ties, will be streamed live at 9 a.m. on the State Department's website, a spokesman for the agency said.

Earhart's twin-engine Lockheed vanished July 2, 1937, as she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, left New Guinea (now Papua New Guinea) on their way to Howland Island in the South Pacific as part of an attempt to circle the Earth.

Bing Maps

The search will center on the Nikumaroro Islands in the South Pacific.

The half-million-dollar search, financed with private funds, will begin in July. The key area is the Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro between Hawaii and Australia, The Journal reports:

A search team will concentrate on the deep waters near Nikumaroro, which was the site of a 2010 search that focused on coral reefs and nearby shallow waters, these people said.

The search will be spearheaded again by the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, which has championed the theory that the renowned female aviator and Fred Noonan, the other crew member on the July 1937 flight, ended up on or near the west coast of the island, formerly called Gardner Island.

Adam Savage on the Mythbusters' New Show, Unchained Reaction

Early on, we pitted special effects artists against rocket scientists. And the rocket scientists came up with a switch. It was two pieces of wire stuck in a bowl of distilled water. And nothing happened. But then they had a see-saw above it, and the see-saw dumped a chunk of table salt into the water, which immediately made the water conductive, and contacted the switch and activated the next thing. And that was super fun to watch because while I know that salt water conducts electricity and that distilled water is a very terrible, poor conductor of electricity, I did not know that that reaction could be made to happen so quickly. Both Jamie and I were kind of giggly about it.

That?s really great, because then the show becomes more than a reality competition?people can learn about science, too. Absolutely. And therein lie the keys to the castle. Because you?ve got this structure which has some similarities with MythBusters?people having fun, putting stuff together, working with limitations and working with challenges. When you watch it, you?re actually learning something. You might not realize it, because hopefully it?s entertaining television, but when you go away, perhaps you have another arrow in your quiver for solving problems later on.
