Mark Wahlberg Pumped For Michael Bay's 'Pain And Gain'

Not everyone can make the transition from early '90s rapper/underwear model to Academy Award-nominated actor. Over the years, Mark Wahlberg proved he could break the mold, and he's hoping to do that again with Michael Bay for "Pain and Gain," the director's small true-life passion project about Miami bodybuilders turned kidnappers.

Wahlberg spoke with MTV [...]

AP Source: A's trade Bailey, Sweeney to Red Sox

(AP) ? A person with knowledge of the negotiations says the Oakland Athletics have agreed to trade All-Star closer Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Sweeney to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Josh Reddick and prospects Miles Head and Raul Alcantara.

The person confirmed the deal, first reported by ESPN on Wednesday, to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because final details are still being worked out before a formal announcement from the clubs.

Bailey becomes the fourth key pitcher traded this month for the rebuilding A's, who dealt starter Trevor Cahill and reliever Craig Breslow to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Dec. 9 and then sent Gio Gonzalez to Washington last Thursday.

The 24-year-old Reddick batted .280 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 87 games for Boston in 2011.

Users Mixed on New Facebook Timeline Format

December 26, 2011 Updated Dec 26, 2011 at 1:31 PM PST

"I hope you have an amazing day."

With more than a thousand Facebook friends, Maria Volari has been answering birthday greetings all day. She is approaching the new changes with caution. "I always kind of watch that. I'm a teacher so I know that a lot of my students and other colleagues are on there. I always watch what I put up."

In addition to bigger pictures, the biggest change to your Facebook layout will be the timeline, a chronological organization of everything you've posted on Facebook.

Balasam Yussif has been testing the new layout for the past few months. "I think it's a positive experience because if you use it properly you can set it up to be kind of a visual calendar of your life."

Socialogic is a Chicago firm that helps companies manage their social media policies. They have been playing with the new layout too, and experts here say it will require you to do some work.

Jacqueline Zenn, a Social Media Strategist says, "When you set up your timeline it's important to go through and really kind of take a look at what you've got on there and think about do you want that to be indexed and searched and have everybody be able to find it, or do you want just your friends and family to be able to see it, do you maybe want to delete those college party pictures."

But in the end, it will be up to users to judge whether the new Facebook is an improved Facebook.

"I think it's pretty cool. Yeah, it shows you like from the start. It tells a story."

"I think it's kind of annoying and doesn't really make sense to me. I think it was fine the way it was."

"Yeah I agree totally."

"It takes a little bit of effort to get used to it, so we'll see after a month if I like it or not, but right now it's kind of a pain."

And pain or not, users will have seven days to make the transition to the new Facebook.

Japan urges China to help keep North Korea in check (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Japan urged China on Monday to shoulder a big role in ensuring North Korea avoids volatility after the death of its leader, Kim Jong-il.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda also urged Chinese President Hu Jintao to share information about developments in North Korea, where the succession of Kim's youngest son, Kim Jong-un, has fanned speculation about who will really control the secretive one-party state and its nuclear program.

"It is important that we will not let the death of the chairman of the National Defense Commission Kim have a negative impact on the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula," Noda was quoted by a Japanese official as telling Hu while on a visit to in Beijing.

Kim Jong-il's many positions included head of the important military commission.

"Under these circumstance, the role of China, which is the chair country of the six-party talks and has a big influence on North Korea, is extremely important," said Noda, according to the official who briefed reporters but declined to be identified.

The so-called six-party talks involve the two Koreas, China, Japan, the United States and Russia and are aimed at getting North Korea to give up its efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

The Japanese prime minister is the first regional leader to visit China since Kim Jong-il's death was announced a week ago.

China is the North's only major ally and the North has long relied on China for diplomatic and economic support.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua said Hu told Noda that it was in the interests of all sides to maintain stability on the Korean peninsula.

"China is ready to make joint efforts with all relevant parties, including Japan, to maintain peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and to achieve lasting peace, security and order on the peninsula and (in) northeast Asia," Xinhua cited Hu as saying.

Noda urged China to be forthcoming about what it learned about the North's transition.

"I would like vigorous information sharing between Japan and China, and intend to address the situation calmly and properly," the Japanese official cited Noda as telling Hu on the second and final day of his visit.

North Korea has alarmed the region with two plutonium-based nuclear test blasts, a succession of military altercations, and declarations that it was developing uranium enrichment, which could open another path to assembling atomic weapons.

Constraining North Korea is especially important for Japan, which is within range of the North's missiles and wants it to resolve the issue of the fate of Japanese citizens kidnapped and taken to North Korea to help train spies decades ago.

But China is wary about upsetting North Korea, especially during a delicate transition, and has restricted its public comments about the implications of Kim's death to broad calls for stability and calm.

"Both sides agreed that preserving the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula serves the interests of all sides," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in its account of talks on Sunday between Noda and Premier Wen Jiabao.

Jack Warner slams FIFA, president Blatter

Former FIFA vice president Jack Warner has again lashed out at the organisation's president Joseph "Sepp" Blatter, local media reported.

The Jamaica Observer quoted a statement Warner released in which he said that "the arrogance with which FIFA continues to ride roughshod over duly appointed officials ... is unethical and outright immoral."

Warner earlier this year resigned from the world controlling body while he was facing an ethical investigation over corruption allegations involving the president of the Asian Football Confederation Mohamed bin Hammam, who was going to stand against Blatter for presidency.

Warner was accused of trying to influence Caribbean officials to vote for Bin Hammam by giving them money.

Warner criticised Blatter, who a few weeks ago was accused of downplaying racism, in his statement. "The FIFA president must not be allowed to continue the demeaning of people of colour without someone raising a voice to tell him enough is enough.

"The FIFA president cannot continue faux pas after faux pas with impunity especially when all his wrongdoings are along the same vector of megalomania, covert racism and discrimination.

"The time has come to break the silence. One must no longer accept silence as affirming the wrong being perpetuated by the FIFA. In this regard I have decided to break my silence."

Warner accused FIFA and Blatter of undermining the CFU and the continental association CONCACAF.

"One cannot help but wonder (why) this abuse is allowed to continue without a voice being heard from among (the FIFA's) own membership and the wider football community.

"The response would have been so vociferous (if it was UEFA) that even attempts by the FIFA to apologise would have been drowned out," he said.

Exclusive: China's CIC to get $50 billion boost (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's $410 billion sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp. is set to receive additional funding of up to $50 billion, two sources said, a step that could help it move quickly to buy overseas assets, especially in Europe.

The new funding comes along with an agreement between relevant Chinese government agencies to give CIC (CIC.UL) new money to manage every year, the sources who had knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Friday.

The sources asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity surrounding China's management of its foreign reserves.

The agreement would lay out a long-term framework under which CIC would be allocated money to manage from China's foreign exchange reserves and would also chart the future of its domestic investment arm, Central Huijin Investment, the sources said.

"The final plan for capital injection will be unveiled shortly and it could be $50 billion," a source close to the matter said.

CIC officials declined to comment.

The cash injection follows in the wake of plans -- reported by Reuters earlier this month -- to create a new $300 billion vehicle that would be affiliated with China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), the part of the central bank in charge of the daily management of China's $3.2 trillion in foreign exchange reserves.

The new funds for CIC, as well as the planned $300 billion venture under SAFE, were earmarked well before the onset of the euro zone debt crisis that has sparked international speculation about possible contributions from China to a bailout effort.

But the funding would give CIC firepower for buys at a time when attractive European and U.S. assets may come up for sale. CIC operates independently of the central bank and said in March that it had fully invested all its cash and would like the government to allocate it more money.

Chinese media have reported since late 2009 that CIC was seeking $100-$200 billion in new funding, but there have been no subsequent reports of progress.

CIC was created in 2007 when China's Ministry of Finance issued 1.55 trillion yuan in special yuan bonds to swap yuan for $200 billion worth of foreign currency from SAFE.

That provided the initial funds for active management in a bid to enhance returns from the world's largest pile of official foreign reserves.

REAL ASSETS WANTED

China's leaders have said recently that they will seek investments in the real economies of the United States and Europe apart from their routine investments in government debt.

Germany's 'manager magazin' reported in an excerpt of an article to be published on Friday, citing company sources, that CIC was the frontrunner to take a 5-10 percent stake in German luxury carmaker Daimler (DAIGn.DE).

The magazine said Daimler's chief financial officer, Bodo Uebber, had hired an investment bank to arrange a potential deal. Daimler's chief executive, Dieter Zetsche, in July said he would welcome additional investors from China, but added he did not think the Chinese would try to take control.

On Thursday, South Africa's Shanduka Group said it had sold a 25 percent stake to CIC, the latest investment by China in Africa's resources sector.

Shanduka has a diversified asset base that includes coal operations and said in a statement CIC had paid 2 billion rand ($240 million) for the stake.

CIC acquired its shares primarily from exiting shareholders Old Mutual Private Equity (OML.L) (OMLJ.J) and South African investment bank and asset manager Investec (INLJ.J).

Separately on Thursday, state-owned firm China Three Gorges won the competition to buy Portugal's stake in utility EDP (EDP.LS), paying 2.7 billion euros ($3.5 billion), in a privatization seen key to the indebted euro zone country's ability to sell state assets.

The deal also includes Chinese investment in the wider economy and is the brightest news for Portugal since it was forced to seek a 78 billion euro bailout from the European Union and International Monetary Fund in the spring.

11 Christmas songs we hope never to hear again

By Kristin Kalning

I love Christmas, and I love Christmas music. But not all holiday tunes are created equal. Some songs ? Nat King Cole?s ?O Holy Night,? ?Christmas in Hollis? by Run-D.M.C. ? I can listen to over and over. But others make me want to jam railroad ties into my ears, they?re so awful.

Following is the list of 11 Christmas songs that should never have been made. In some cases, they?re sung by artists that I otherwise respect, which makes these terrible tunes all the more troubling. If there?s a Santa Claus, he will banish these awful, insipid, stupid affronts on Christmas to the Island of Misfit Songs.

11. ?Happy Xmas (War is Over),? John Lennon and Yoko Ono - I?m a die-hard Beatles fan, so it pains me to start this list with a John Lennon song. And it?s actually pretty great ? until the 40-second mark, when Yoko comes in and starts her caterwauling. Honestly, John. I know you loved her and all, but why?d you gotta let her sing?

10. ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,? Neil Diamond ? His first Christmas album was a mega-seller, so for his second one, Neil got a little creative with his arrangements, including a reggae version of ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.? He begins this song by calling out to the boys and girls in a Jamaican accent. I?m embarrassed for him.

9. ?Santa Baby,? Madonna ? I?ll bet the modern-day Madonna listens to this 1987 version of herself and cringes. I know I do. Perhaps she thought her nasal-voiced, cutsey-pie delivery was sexy, but really, she sounds like a half-in-the-bag bimbo. For sexy, see Kitt, Eartha, or Minogue, Kylie.

8. ?Last Christmas,? Wham ? This song is like cilantro: You either love it, or you think it tastes like soap. I?m in the latter camp. Vapid lyrics and cheesy music make "Last Christmas" completely unlistenable. Worse yet, those damned ?Glee? kids went and covered it, so all the teenyboppers are into it now. Gaaaah.

?7. ?Do They Know It?s Christmas?? Band Aid ? When I was a youngster, I thought this song was awesome, because it had Sting and Bono and Duran Duran (swoon). And it was made to help those affected by the Ethiopian famine of the mid-1980s. But the lyrics appear to be written by a third-grader (?There won?t be snow in Africa this Christmas time), or a pompous first-world jackass (?Well tonight, thank God it's them instead of yooooouuuu!?)?

6. ?Silver and Gold,? Burl Ives ? This song has the power to bring down a room. I know because I?ve seen it happen, during my son?s inaugural viewing of ?Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.? Here they?ve just introduced Yukon Cornelius, and then, bam! Preschoolers all take a powder while the snowman guy sings ?Silver and Gold.? Buzz kill!

5. ?Zat You, Santa Claus?? Buster Poindexter ? Look, I don?t like the Louis Armstrong version of this song, either. But the Buster Poindexter rendition is nails-on-a-chalkboard bad. It?s change-the-station bad. It?s pull-the-car-over-and-smoke-a-cigarette bad. Bad, bad, bad.

4. ?Christmas Don't Be Late,? Alvin and the Chipmunks ? When you?re 5 years old, this song is hilarious. When you?re an adult, this song is torture. Let?s say you were a spy, and you were captured. How many times do you think you could endure this record before you broke down? Think about it. And then, answer me this: Why is a grown man living with three chipmunks? 3. ?Baby It?s Cold Outside,? Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone ?The lyrics of this song make me mildly uncomfortable to begin with. This woman is trying to leave, for God?s sake, but her ?date? won?t let her. I don?t mind so much when it?s Dean Martin. But Zooey Deschanel sounds so drowsy when she sings, ?Say, what?s in this drink?? that I really want to call 911. 2. ?Wonderful Christmastime,? Paul McCartney ? For an artist with his pedigree, this song is unforgivable. It?s an overproduced, strangled-by-synthesizer mess that deserves the distinction as one of the worst Christmas songs ever. Insult to injury: Sir McCartney, already richer than God, makes almost half a million bucks a year off this song, it gets played so much.1. ?O Holy Night,? Christina Aguilera ? Let me first say that this is my very favorite Christmas hymn, and it offends me when celebrities mangle it. Aguilera?s taste level, always in question, is particularly egregious here. I don?t deny that she?s got serious pipes, but this song deserves reverence, not show-offy vocal gymnastics. Christina: Must you recite the Lord?s Prayer midway through? And why, WHY extend this train wreck with a Broadway-meets-gospel-choir ending? The worst. Period.

Asian stocks higher on signs US economy improving (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Asian stock markets rose Friday in thin holiday trading on signs the U.S. economy is improving.

China's benchmark in Shanghai gained 1.5 percent to 2,218.01 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.1 percent to 18,576.06. Japan's financial markets are closed for a public holiday.

Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.2 percent to 4,140.40, Seoul's Kospi was up 1.2 percent to 1,868.84 and Singapore added 0.4 percent to 2,675.44.

Investors have been cheered in recent weeks by evidence of a rebound in the U.S. ? the world's biggest economy and a crucial export market for many countries in Asia.

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits dropped last week to the lowest level since April 2008, the third week in a row that applications fell. The Conference Board reported that its measure of future economic activity jumped last month, the second straight gain.

Investors were also encouraged by an agreement in the U.S. Congress to extend a payroll tax cut for two months.

Trading volume is normally low during the next week as many investors take vacations over Christmas and New Year. Global markets are closed Monday for Christmas.

Credit ratings agency Fitch said it expects growth in Asia's developing economies will slow slightly next year but still expand by a robust 6.8 percent, which should help bolster the region's wealthier nations.

"Emerging Asia's resilience provides some support for high-income Asian countries relative to other advanced economies," Fitch said in a report.

Other analysts are more pessimistic. HSBC is forecasting Europe's economy will contract next year by 1 percent while the U.S. grows a weak 1.5 percent as Europe's debt crisis undercuts business confidence.

"Despite signs of greater urgency to deal with the problem, investors remain mostly unconvinced," HSBC said in a report. "This loss of faith is reminiscent of the collapse in confidence in 2008, when the wheels came off the global economy."

"Back then, forecasters completely failed to grasp the gravity of the situation," HSBC said. "The same may be true today."

On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5 percent while the broader S&P 500 index gained 0.8 percent.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was up 40 cents to $99.93 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 86 cents to finish at $99.53 on Thursday.

In London, Brent crude was steady at $107.87 on the ICE futures exchange.

The euro was up 0.1 percent at $1.3068. The dollar was down 1 percent at 78.10 yen.

Mysterious 'space ball' crashes in Namibia

A strange metal ball dropped out of the sky and slammed into the remote grassland of northern Namibia recently, according to press reports.

The 14-inch-wide (35-centimeter) metallic sphere hit the ground about 480 miles (750 kilometers) north of Windhoek, the African country's capital. It left a crater 13 inches (33 cm) deep and 12.5 feet (3.8 meters) across, the Agence-France Presse (AFP) reported Thursday.

The metal "space ball" weighs 13 pounds (6 kilograms). It has a rough surface and appears to consist of two halves that were welded together, according to AFP.

The mystery sphere was discovered in mid-November, but local authorities held off on announcing the find until they could perform a few tests. They determined it poses no danger to the public.

"It is not an explosive device, but rather hollow, but we had to investigate all this first," police deputy inspector general Vilho Hifindaka told AFP.

However, Hifindaka and his colleagues still don't know what the object is or where exactly it came from. They've contacted NASA and the European Space Agency for help, AFP reported.

Locals apparently heard several small explosions a few days before the ball was found. Similar spheres have also been found in Australia and Central America over the last two decades, local authorities said.

Quite a bit of space junk has rained from the sky this year. In September, for example, NASA's defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) ? a 6.5-ton craft that monitored climate from 1991 until 2005 ? plunged into the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.

Just a month later, Germany's 2.7-ton Roentgen Satellite (ROSAT) fell to Earth over the Indian Ocean.

Nobody on the ground was injured by either satellite crash.

An even bigger spacecraft will plummet to Earth soon. Russia's failed Phobos-Grunt Mars probe got stuck in Earth orbit shortly after its Nov. 8 launch, and it's been circling lower and lower ever since.

Most experts predict the 14.5-ton spacecraft will come crashing down by mid-January.

Subscribers to Verizon Wireless will be able to watch the February's Super Bowl live on their smartphones in what will be the first time the game is streamed live to mobile -- as well as to PCs and tablets via the Web.

Mobile consumption of NFL programming is enjoying "triple digit growth" year-over-year, says Hans Schroeder, SVP for Media Strategy, in this interview with Beet.TV at the league's Manhattan headquarters.

The NFL began streaming games in 2005 with Sprint and switched to Verizon for the 2010 season.

For an overview of the NFL's streaming on the Web, check out this piece by Ryan Lawler in GigaOm.

Rajoy, Spain's new PM, warns of tough economic road ahead

Spain's new prime minister Mariano Rajoy was sworn in today amid muted optimism that he can make the tough economic reforms that the eurozone wants.

Spain?s new Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was sworn in today amid cautious optimism here and across Europe that he will deepen painful but necessary economic reforms, and that the country will be a driver of recovery, not of stagnation.

Unlike most other troubled European countries, namely Italy, Spain has not shied away from reforms, even with the outgoing Socialist government. Mr. Rajoy, a conservative, is not so much an agent of change but of continuity for policymakers and markets alike, analysts say. He will control parliament because of his party's absolute majority in November elections, allowing him to push through legislation quickly.

?The future could not be any more somber,? Rajoy said in his investiture speech today. The debt to GDP ratio increased to nearly 70 percent in 2011, compared to 36 percent in 2007, he said. ?We face huge difficulties, and very demanding challenges are ahead.? ? But those who believe Spain will not implement the reforms to be successful in Europe are totally wrong.?

Rajoy was sworn in for his four-year term today before King Juan Carlos, and his cabinet will be in place by tomorrow. Difficult economic times, and at least a one-year recession, likely lie ahead.

The greatest challenge will be finding a balance between growth and austerity. Markets have rebounded since Rajoy?s November victory in anticipation of economic reforms in the financial and labor sectors that would spur growth and decrease unemployment, while still cutting public spending.?Spaniards' endurance of cuts is likely to be further tested after three years of austerity and stagnation.?

Keeping the 18-wheeler on track?

The euro zone, a 17-member fiscal union that shares a single currency, is like an 18-wheeler. Spain has the fourth-largest economy and population in the eurozone, and as such it?s one of four critical axles, along with Germany, France, and Italy. Just about any tire can go flat, perhaps even fall off, and the truck will still roll on ? unless the tire is on one of those four axles.?

A broken down eurozone would quickly drag the United Kingdom with it and the rest of Europe would follow, with the US trailing close by. Rajoy's job of steering the Spanish economy is thus a critical one.?

?Spain though is quite constructive. We saw good success. Fiscal adjustment has been credible, social acceptance is good. It?s a good example,? said Luigi Speranza, a London-based eurozone economist with French bank BNP Paribas. ?But it?s very important, not just because of size. It?s politically important. If Spain fails everything will fail.??

The cost of borrowing for Spain has plummeted from nearly 7 percent to 5.3 percent since Rajoy was elected, although much has to do with the European Central Bank?s decision to inject almost ?500 billion of cheap cash into the European financial system. Still, Italy and other countries have not benefited as much, due to a lack of political consensus, which Spain has.?

The pain ahead

But during the two-day debate on his appointment that started Monday, Rajoy did not paint an optimistic short-term future. Instead, he pleaded for Spaniards' patience.?

Chile girl dies after split from conjoined twin (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile ? A 10-month-old girl who was surgically separated from her conjoined twin died Sunday after suffering general organ failure, said the director of a Chilean children's hospital.

Doctors at Luis Calvo Mackenna Hospital had separated Maria Jose Paredes Navarrete from her twin sister Maria Paz late Tuesday at the thorax, abdomen and pelvis in a marathon, 20-hour surgery. Maria Jose ran into cardiac problems that required her to be revived three times afterward, and Maria Paz remains clinging to life, said hospital director Osvaldo Artaza.

A hospital statement said Maria Jose had suffered "a flaw in the right side of the heart as a consequence of pulmonary hypertension that afflicted her since her birth."

The statement said Maria Paz was in a stable condition, with her kidneys starting to function.

Chileans have closely followed news about the twin girls, with updates about their condition making online and newspaper headlines.

Artaza said the surgery affected all of the deceased girl's organs, while "recognizing the delicate state of Maria Paz, we are hopeful."

"We are conscious that we made every effort," Artaza said. "It's a moment of deep pain, of deep grieving."

The twins were born in the town of Loncoche, about 470 miles (760 kilometers) south of the capital of Santiago, and had spent their entire lives under hospital care.

They underwent seven surgeries before Tuesday's procedure, in which 25 surgeons and anesthesiologists participated.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, about 35 percent of conjoined twins survive only one day, while the overall survival rate runs between 5 and 25 percent.

Cops: Florida woman jabbed ex with antlers

By msnbc.com staff

A Florida woman was charged with domestic battery?she used the antlers of a mounted deer head to beat up her ex-boyfriend, authorities say.

Chelsea Harrison armed herself with the deer head after her ex-boyfriend Terry Nowakowski broke down the door Tuesday to get into their Zephyrhills house, authorities told the Tampa Bay Times.

?

She "began striking him in the face and body with the ends of the antlers until she lost her grip dropping it to the floor," according to a story on tampabay.com, citing a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report. Nowakowski, 20, managed to flee and call for help, the website reported.

Read the original story on tampabay.com

The victim told authorities that he and Harrison, 23, were no longer a couple but have a 3-year-old daughter together and both own the home in Zephyrhills, according to tampabay.com.

The fight reportedly began when Nowakowski walked outside the home and called his new girlfriend "which he believes angered Chelsea," tampabay.com reported. ?

When he tried to get back into the house, he found the door locked. He claims she then punched him when he poked his head inside a window after removing a screen. At that point, he decided to break down the door and got hit with the antlers, the website said.

He?reportedly suffered cuts and swelling in the attack.??

Janet Jackson On Being 'An Emotional Eater' (omg!)

Janet Jackson speaks with Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson -- Access Hollywood

Janet Jackson is opening up about her battle with the bulge, telling Access Hollywood' s Shaun Robinson how she's finally getting control of her weight.

"Your scale can be your worst enemy, so it's really not about a number -- it's about looking in the mirror and feeling good about you and feeling healthy and loving who you are when you see that person in the mirror," new NutriSystem spokesperson Janet told Shaun in an interview set to air tonight on Access Hollywood.

Janet is the latest celebrity to front a weight loss program, and she opened up to Shaun about her struggles, admitting her weight battle has been an emotional one.

"I am an emotional eater... There are people that don't eat when they're stressed. I eat when I stress, when I'm down, when I'm in that state of not being in the greatest space," the superstar said. "And that's my place of comfort that I go to for that moment. Then I kick myself after doing it."

Beyond opening up about her weight, Janet revealed she's nervous for her niece, Paris Jackson, who has lined up her first feature film role - in "Lundon's Bridge and the Three Keys" -- a live action feature alongside Larry King, who will provide voiceover work.

"I'm excited for her, but it worries me a little bit," Janet told Shaun. "Yeah, I wish that she would maybe wait.

"I got into the business at a young age," Janet, who hit the stage at an early age, and the television screen on the 1970s sitcom "Good Times," told Shaun. "It's not an easy thing. Your childhood...you completely lose and I didn't get to experience that, so she has the rest of her adult life to be that actress that she wants to be and I told her that. Yeah, I told her I would take this time to just study... really, really study the craft."

Holiday Pets

We just had a pet emergency here at home. My corgi Kylie, who was never spayed (because she never leaves the yard or spends time with unfixed male dogs, and my pug needed a few surgeries that left me unwilling to put another beloved under the knife at the time), somehow contracted a very serious uterine infection that required an emergency surgery.

Kylie with my daughter, on a better day.

Due to her age, 10, and state of the infection, the doctor gave us dire warnings that she might not make it. But the alternative was kidney failure and death, so? the good news, she made it. She?s home recovering and it seems she will be just fine and with us for a while longer. Thank goodness!

Kylie, not feeling so great after surgery.

Starting to feel better, taking it slow.

This reminds me? pets are expensive. We love them and it?s worth it, but not everyone has a spare few hundred (or thousand, as it may be) for emergency pet care these days. Times are tough. Just something else to consider before adopting a new pet. I?m sure Jane Lynch here, who just adopted this lucky little one, won?t have any trouble.

Congrats to the Jane Lynch family!

But, giving a live animal as a holiday gift is usually a bad idea, for a number of reasons discussed here. But mainly because a) a lot of people who think they want pets are not really ready for the responsibility and b) even if the time is right to add a new member to the family, the holidays are a source of stress and new situations, and maybe the new addition would make an easier transition outside the added excitement/visits/decorations that the holidays can bring.

However.

If you?ve weighed the pros and cons and decide that a pet is right for you, please consider adopting from a shelter. Friend of Whine Sisters Connie Brockway is involved with?Secondhand Hounds. I just went out and fell in love. About ten times. We?re not ready for a new family member here, but one day, when I am, I am rescuing a shelter dog. Like this one:

Look at that face! A sweet little pug!

Or this:

Ohh.

Ohhhh, my tender heart!

Secondhand Hounds also has cats and other animals available. Author Eloisa James adopted her beloved Lucy, a dachshund mix, there.

Another great holiday gift idea: donations to Secondhand Hounds or an animal shelter near you.

Have you ever added a fur-baby over the holidays? Or maybe goldfish? Lizards? Turtles? Have any holiday pet stories to share?

PFT: Peyton not cleared to practice yet

Pittsburgh Steelers v Kansas City ChiefsGetty Images

Romeo Crennel is making a change at quarterback.

Crennel, who took over as Chiefs interim head coach after Todd Haley was fired this week, plans to demote Tyler Palko and start Kyle Orton on Sunday against the Packers. The only question is whether the injured finger on Orton?s throwing hand will cause him any problems. But if Orton can?t throw because of the finger, Palko still won?t start ? Crennel told the Chiefs today that he has decided to move rookie Ricky Stanzi ahead of Palko on the depth chart as well.

?I told them we?re making a change at quarterback, that we?re changing the quarterback and that Tyler would not be the starter this week,? Crennel told the media today after talking to his players. ?Orton or Stanzi will be the starter. Which one? I?m not exactly sure yet because Orton has a finger that he has got to work through, and we?ll have to see during the week how his finger is and how he comes along and if he can handle it with that finger. Stanzi is a rookie and if Orton is able to go and can do it, then Orton is going to be the quarterback. If Orton cannot do it, then Stanzi will be the quarterback, and I told the team that today.?

Crennel hinted that the Chiefs might go all shotgun, all the time on offense if Orton is the starter.

?He?s been throwing a little bit with the trainers, and they said that for short passes, he?s been doing pretty good,? Crennel said. ?Now, we?ll have to see how he does in practice. We might have to protect him a little bit from taking a snap, and we?ve got a plan in place to do that so that we can still operate the offense without him having to take a snap.?

That plan may not sound like a winning formula on Sunday against the Packers, but considering how badly Palko has played, the Chiefs had to do something.

Feds crack down on homeopathic weight loss remedy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal regulators are ordering several companies to stop selling an unproven weight loss remedy that uses protein from the human placenta.

The Food and Drug Administration issued warning letters to seven companies that sell the protein as drops, pellets or sprays. Human chorionic gonadotropin is produced by the placenta and found in the urine of pregnant women. While it is approved for certain infertility treatments, the FDA says there is no evidence it helps reduce weight.

Many of the products cited in the warning letters claim to change "abnormal eating patterns," and help people lose 20 to 30 pounds in as little as a month when used with a low-calorie diet, usually around 500 calories per day.

Health experts say such restrictive diets can be dangerous.

"These products are marketed with incredible claims and people think that if they're losing weight, HCG must be working," said Elizabeth Miller, of FDA's division for non-prescription drugs and health fraud, in a statement. "But the data simply does not support this ? any loss is from severe calorie restriction. Not from the HCG."

The products are advertised as homeopathic remedies, or highly diluted drugs made from natural ingredients and sold with medical claims. Many doctors view homeopathic remedies as ineffective but mostly harmless because the drugs in them are present in such tiny amounts.

But the FDA said the products targeted Tuesday could be dangerous when taken as directed.

Homeopathic treatments are based on principles unverified by mainstream science, and often reference mystical-sounding concepts like "vital force" and "healing energy."

In 1938, Congress passed a law granting homeopathic remedies the same legal status as regular pharmaceuticals. The law's principal author was Sen. Royal Copeland of New York, a trained homeopath.

While regulation of the products is minimal, the FDA maintains a list of approved ingredients that can be used for homeopathic drugs. HCG is not among the approved ingredients.

After decades of declining use, homeopathic remedies have revived in recent decades with the burst of interest in vitamins, herbs and other unconventional treatments.

The companies cited by regulators have 15 days to respond and detail how they intend to remove their products from the market. Failure to do so may result in legal action, including seizure and injunction, or criminal prosecution.

Boston U. drops Boston College 75-61 (AP)

BOSTON ? Darryl Partin scored 15 of his 27 points in the closing 8 1/2 minutes to help Boston University to a 75-61 victory over its crosstown rival Boston College on Saturday.

D.J. Irving added 17 points and Matt Griffin and Dom Morris each had 11 for the Terriers (4-4), who won their fourth straight for coach Joe Jones ? an assistant under second-year Boston College coach Steve Donahue last season.

Lonnie Jackson led Boston College (2-6) with 11 points. It was the Eagles' third consecutive loss.

The two schools ? longtime hockey rivals ? first met on the basketball court in 1905. Boston College owns a 39-17 all-time edge.

Partin, last week's America East player of the week, came in averaging 23.4 points per game. He had 10 points at the half on just 3-of-10 shooting.

PFT: McNabb goes unclaimed through waivers

Jeff FisherAP

Nearly a third of all NFL head-coaching jobs could become vacant after the 2011 season.? In addition to the Jaguars, teams that could (emphasis ?could?) make a change presently include, in no particular order other than the order in which I scan through the league?s eight divisions, the Dolphins, Colts, Chiefs, Chargers, Giants, Eagles, Vikings, Buccaneers, and Rams.

So who will replace these coaches?? Beyond Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden, and Jeff Fisher, there aren?t many (any) obvious candidates.

Let?s consider the three categories from which head coaches typically emerge:? former NFL head coaches, current NFL assistant coaches, and college head coaches.

Former NFL head coaches:? In the hopes of not omitting anyone (a sentiment that applies to all three categories), the list of former NFL coaches who could return ? and who currently are coaching ? includes Cowher (whose ?plan? to not coach in 2012 could change dramatically if the Giants job opens up), Jon Gruden, Fisher, Tony Dungy (who consistently has said he?s not coming back), Brian Billick, Jim Fassel, Dennis Green, Marty Schottenheimer, Eric Mangini, Jim Mora, Steve Mariucci, Brad Childress, Jack Del Rio, and Herm Edwards.

Of those, Cowher, Jon Gruden, and Fisher seem to constitute the ?A? list.? Billick wants back in, but he recently said he thinks Jacksonville will look to go younger and cheaper, which means he won?t be cheap.? (Or young.)? Edwards could be a surprise choice in Miami, if Carl Peterson takes over the football operations.? Mangini also has been linked to the Dolphins, although reports that he has been consulting with owner Stephen Ross are erroneous.

There?s another group of former NFL head coaches to consider ? those who aren?t yet former NFL head coaches.? Though it?s unusual for a newly-fired coach to get an NFL job right away, John Fox did it last year when jumping from Carolina to Denver.? The fact that Fox has instantly made the Broncos into a contender could make other former head coaches instantly attractive.? That list could (emphasis ?could?) include Tony Sparano, Jim Caldwell, Todd Haley, Norv Turner, Tom Coughlin, Andy Reid, Leslie Frazier, Raheem Morris, and Steve Spagnuolo.

Of those, Reid would be the most likely to land somewhere else right away, if he?s fired in Philly (or if he decides it?s time to walk away).? Also, a return by Coughlin to Jacksonville could be intriguing.? Spagnuolo also could get consideration elsewhere in 2012 as a head coach, although if Reid stays in Philly it makes sense for Reid to lure the team?s former linebackers coach back to town to run the defense.

Current NFL assistant coaches:? For starters, plenty of former NFL head coaches currently are working for other NFL teams.? The list includes Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron, Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, Chiefs quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn, Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, Vikings linebackers coach Mike Singletary, Dolphins defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice, Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz, Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, and Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Of that group, Phillips and Haslett are the most intriguing.? Phillips has been a head coach three prior times, but his immediate transformation of a historically bad Texans defense merits consideration for a fourth opportunity, as linebacker Connor Barwin told NBC SportsTalk on Friday.? In Washington, the performance of Haslett?s stout defense has been overshadowed by a continuously struggling offense.

McDaniels already has been linked to the Chiefs, but that will be a difficult sell, given McDaniels? performance in Denver and, more recently, St. Louis.

The universe of assistant NFL coaches who have never worked as NFL head coaches yields a smaller range of relatively obvious choices.? Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the fraternal twin of Jets coach Rex Ryan, badly wants to make the next step.? Unlike Rex, who successfully kept a sock in it until he became a head coach, Rob arguably is talking a bit too much for a guy who isn?t a head coach.? (Rob also needs to visit the barber.)

Beyond Rob Ryan, there aren?t many/any hot names, which typically come from the staffs of the hottest teams.? In Green Bay, there?s a perception that Mike McCarthy is primarily responsible for the success of the franchise, which undermines the contributions of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements.? On defense, assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach Winston Moss could get some consideration, as could outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene (who also would benefit from a trip to the salon).

The 9-2 49ers also should generate some candidates, starting (and perhaps ending) with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.? With head coach Jim Harbaugh getting nearly all of the credit for the team?s performance, Fangio is really the only name that currently stands out.

Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano may not get much buzz given that it?s his first year on the job, but that assignment has become a launching pad for head coaches.? If the Ravens play deep into the postseason, Pagano could get consideration.

Another first-year coordinator seems to be the perfect fit for the one vacancy that already exists.? In a Wednesday visit to PFT Live, Mike Dempsey of 1010XL suggested Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden as the next coach of the Jaguars.? It makes sense, on every level.? Gruden fits Brian Billick?s ?young and cheap? demographic, but Gruden also brings name recognition of his older and more expensive brother.? The name carries the most weight in northern Florida, where Jon won a Super Bowl and where Jay was a mainstay in the Arena League.? Then there?s the fact that Jay Gruden has gotten the most out of rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, who was drafted one round behind Blaine Gabbert.

(As a reader has pointed out in the comments, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer could end up being considered for one of the various vacancies.? Ditto for Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, who served as the interim coach in Buffalo and who has gotten some consideration for prior vacancies.)

College head coaches:? The instant success of Jim Harbaugh after stints with Stanford and the University of San Diego (not to be confused with, as I have in the past, San Diego State University) could reverse the perception that college coaches can?t get it done in the NFL.? It shouldn?t.? Harbaugh is the exception to the rule that the most important skills possessed by college head coaches ? recruiting ? are largely wasted at the NFL level.

Iowa?s Kirk Ferentz periodically is mentioned as a candidate to coach at the NFL level, and he?ll again be linked to Kansas City if Haley is fired.? Beyond Ferentz, the list currently is short to nonexistent.

UPDATE 10:00 a.m. ET:? I deliberately omitted former Packers coach Mike Sherman from the list of former NFL head coaches who could return, since he hasn?t coached in the NFL since 2005 and he has generated little or no buzz since being fired by the Packers.? But Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that the Jaguars contacted Sherman even before firing Jack Del Rio.? If true, it means that Brian Billick?s ?younger and cheaper? description of the Jags? job requirements perhaps should be reduced to simply ?cheaper.?
